Must Pump

When a pump is called a "Must Pump", it means it has a large enough pump cavity to accomodate crushed grapes and has the power to move them through the pump head. If you are looking for just one pump to accomodate all winemaking tasks you will need a must pump with speed control, such as our MoreWine Brand Chunky Pumps. The speed control allows the pump to be used for all applications from must transfer to tank transfer to filtering.

There are three types of speed control: mechanical, hydraulic and Frequency Drive. The frequency drive is the best and the type of variable speed must pump we carry. A frequency drive is a an electronic power converter that takes in AC electricity from your wall, converts it to DC and regulates it, and then outputs 220V 3 phase power to the pump motor. By outputting a constant voltage and amperage to the pump motor, the drive can regulate the motor's speed by varying the frequency of the electrical signal. Unlike a reostat, which varies the voltage supplied to the motor, this solution does not require high amperages to acheive the same net amount of work. The practical result of that transformation of power is that you can control the motor speed without injuring the motor itself or exceeding the capacity of a normal electrical circuit, and allows flow rates on most must pumps from just above 0 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) to full speed.
