Description

The future is here today, and the future is HDPE Fermentation & Storage Tanks from Speidel. Made in Germany from nothing but undyed and food-safe plastic, these tanks are produced with particularly thick walls which preserves the aroma and the alcohol for a markedly long time. The stable carrying handles have been tried and tested for decades and are extremely durable.

Are you tired of carboys? Hate siphoning to transfer? Wish you could ferment larger batches in a single container? Sick of lifting 50lbs by a small metal handle? Done with worrying about shattered glass, injury and lost product? Well then have we got the solution for you!

These heavy duty plastic tanks offer a fantastic fermentation & storage solution at a great price.

Key Features:

  • Heavy duty HDPE construction is durable and resists oxygen transfer. None of the risks of working with glass.
  • Small footprint and rectangular shape makes them easy to store - take better advantage of the space you have to dedicate to wine & beer making.
  • Built-in handles make these tanks easy to move, even when full.
  • Large lid opening makes them easy to clean by hand - say goodbye to your carboy brush!
  • All ports seal with gaskets and the vessel can be fully sealed for long-term storage.
  • Includes a spigot and oversized 2-piece Speidel airlock.
  • Designed and manufactured in Germany by Speidel, the makers of our legendary commercial wine tanks.
  • 22"L x 16"W x 22" H, 8.82 lbs

FAQ:

  • Can filled containers be carried by the handles?
    • Depending on the weight—barrels up to 30L are no problem—60L is the limit and should not be carried when completely full. The handles have a weight capacity of 30kg (66 lbs).
  • Is there an upper limit on the alcohol content of the stored liquid?
    • In principle, there is not. However, it should be noted that the higher the alcohol content, the faster the seals and, to a lesser extent, the tank itself will wear out.
  • Up to what temperature can the containers be used?
    • For short periods of time the containers can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C (176°F). This temperature should not be exceeded. For longer periods of time the containers can be used at temperatures up to 60°C (140°F).

I have used several Speidel fermenters, and when I decided to ferment 10 gallon batches I opted for this style which had a similar lid to my 30 liter units, rather than the large top 60 liter unit.

Why choose this over the FE730?
Jonathan Harmon on Aug 3, 2021
Speidel Plastic Fermenter | Rectangular HDPE Storage Tank | 60L | 15.9 gal
Speidel Plastic Fermenter | Rectangular HDPE Storage Tank | 60L | 15.9 gal
Speidel Plastic Fermenter | Round HDPE Storage Tank | 60L | 15.9 gal
Speidel Plastic Fermenter | Round HDPE Storage Tank | 60L | 15.9 gal
BEST ANSWER: I have used both, but prefer the FE730 over the FE720, because I don't use them for fermentation, only for short term storage (i.e. Time to remove wine from an oak barrel but not ready to bottle). I have friends that use the FE720 for red wine fermentation and for post fermentation maceration and that works better for them due to the wide open top. Bottom line is the FE720 with the wide open top is better for fermentation and the FE730 with the smaller screw on top is better for storage.
What is the differnce between this and the 60 liter fermenter?
Louis Volpintesta Jr on May 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This is a storage container, you can do your ml fermentation in it but I would not do your initial fermentation in it because you can not do a good punch down. Hope this helps
Why choose this over the FE720?

Speidel Plastic Fermenter | Round HDPE Storage Tank | 60L | 15.9 gal
Speidel Plastic Fermenter | Round HDPE Storage Tank | 60L | 15.9 gal
BEST ANSWER: There are several reasons to choose this one. For one, the lid is way, WAY easier to install/remove. It's easier to clean the lid as well. It's a little more narrow so fits better on a shelf if you have several lined up. Some people prefer these for aging after primary fermentation.
How well does this work as a primary fermenter?
Jonathan Harmon on Aug 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: GREAT!! I have (2) 60l's for primaries and (4) 30l"s for secondaries. Done with glass!! Easy to clean! Easy to pitch and harvest yeast!
During the winter we brew twice a week, 11 gallon batches. We brew to fill and keep 30.kegs full till we put put our boats in the water in mid April. So we brew from the end of October to the first of April. So we brew right around 250 gallon. All in Speidel!! Love them and use them hard!!
if I want to store wine but cant fill it all the way, what should I do?
Mark A Coenen on Sep 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: While CO2 can work for blanketing some head space, Nitrogen or Argon is more ideal gas. CO2 can dissolve into the wine which would cause it to carbonate which is why we recommend Nitrogen or Argon. As mentioned, glass marbles will also do the trick of displacing the volume to reduce the head space.
Can someone please confirm the exterior dimensions as 22"L x 16"W x 22" H for this 60 L rectangular version? It seems this works out to be much larger than 60 L. I've got limited space and need to know the exact measurements before purchasing.
Derick Weis on May 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Dimensions as pictured in question:
22”L includes spigot
27”H includes airlock installed
15” W handle to handle
Great fermenter - extra space, easy to clean, strong and well-made
hi, the 60 liters of the fermenter is to the top of the fermenter or (literally all the way to the top of the lid) or is there an additional space?
Geovanna Racines on Jun 18, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I'm sure the stated capacity (60 liters in this case) is not to the top of the lid. I think it's to the bottom of the "lip" (the part at the top of the tank that the lid screws down on). So there will be a very small amount of headspace even wen the tank contains the 60 liters. I think.
What is the diameter of the top opening on this fermenter?
Sergio A Quevedo on May 8, 2022
BEST ANSWER: 7 1/4” inside rim to inside rim
How do you best clean it from wine residue?
Moniko Monov on Nov 7, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Clean up is easy. First put about a quart of hot water in tank and swirl around to remove heavy residue and empty. Put another quart of hot water and add a tablespoon of un scented Oxy- clean available every where. Use a sponge and easily remove all residue. Rinse out with cold water. I store tank closed with about a cup of potassium metabisulfite solution in it.
It will stay sterile till next use. Just empty out solution and refill when needed.. Thank you
