Description

Use this inexpensive, yet accurate thermometer to check yeast rehydration water temperature. Some customers like this design because they can simultaneously measure water temperature while stirring into solution yeast, tannins, additives, nutrients, etc.. Can also be used to accurately measure cap temperatures. Use it to calibrate bi-metal thermometers and cheaper floating thermometers. A great overall pick up for your lab bench at a fantastic price. Spirit filled with a 0-220 F range.

Fast Read
Doesn't take very long to get a reading. Better than the floating thermometer which takes too long to get a reading. Also can use this thermometer in carboys. The stick on thermometers aren't that accurate.

Total immersion. Bad ratings due to testing wrong
Note these are total immersion thermometers. They are designed to be read immersed in the testing liquid up to the top of the red reading line. They will not give accurate readings by immersing just the tip. Work well for big pots, and that's the idea.

Not even close to accurate :-(
Years ago I had purchased a mercury lab thermometer from MoreBeer and it was awesome! When it broke I looked to buy it again, but sadly it was no longer available so I thought I'd try this model. Based on the mostly positive reviews I was hopeful, but when it arrived I tested it out and got the following results:
- Ice water: 34 degrees (ok - same as my digital kitchen thermometer)
- Body temperature under my tongue: 94 degrees (Yikes - looks like I'm dead! Kitchen digital thermometer spot on at 99 degrees)
- Boiling water: 200 degrees (maybe if I was on a mountain top but I am at sea level - Kitchen digital accurate again at 212 degrees)
I also tested it at a normal mash temperature of 153 degrees (per my kitchen digital thermometer) and this was a full 5 degrees off at 148.
The MoreBeer customer service folks were great as always and quickly offered to refund my money or replace the item (I chose the former). Maybe mine was a dud, but if you do get one I would strongly suggest you test it out before using it to calibrate anything in your brewery.

Brew with Confidence!
These are the only thermometers I trust completely. Built-in mash tun and HLT dial thermometers seem like a good idea, but thermometers with moving parts can lose accuracy due to wear. If I use a digital or dial thermometer for convenience, I always double check the temp with one of these glass thermometers the first couple times to find out how off the readings are!

You can also use these to calibrate your other thermometers.

Basic Tool
This thermometer is my go-to tool for calibrating my other thermometers. Slow but accurate. It's a good idea to keep it in a metal protector to prevent breakage.

essential
Can't make a good beer without knowing the temperatures. This is a must for any brew

Works Well
Maybe not the most accurate thermometer in the world, but has great applications, such as measuring the temperature of my yeast starter before pitching the yeast.

Instantly improved my beer
I was shocked when this great little tool informed me that all of my thermometers were giving erroneous readings. After calibrating the one in my mash tun I got much better efficiency and instantly improved my final product.

Purchased to calibrate
I only use this to calibrate other thermometers, but so far so good.
