  • Proprietary rubber lid gasket allows for a superior seal compared to traditional gaskets, providing better protection for your wine
  • Made from 304 stainless steel with ultra-high-quality laser welds
  • 2R rated interior finish resists residue build-up and is easy to clean
  • Air pump with pressure gauge, airlock, and ball valve included
  • Made in Germany by Speidel

We are proud to offer our small Variable Volume Tanks from Speidel - a German manufacturer of premium quality stainless steel tanks for the wine industry. The tank body is fabricated from 304-type stainless steel, while the floating lid is made from 316-type stainless and has an inflatable bladder that pumps up to seal the wine off at any volume level. They can be used for primary fermentation as well as aging.

Built in Germany by Speidel, the world-class traditions of German engineering and craftsmanship are reflected in these tanks. And, after examining tanks built by every major manufacturer worldwide, we can safely say that when it comes to features, quality and price, these tanks represent the very best value available in stainless steel wine storage.

These tanks arrive to you complete and ready to go out of the box after a little assembly. The tanks are fitted with 1/2 inch threaded ports to accomodate the included 1/2 inch stainless steel ball valve and 1/2 inch stainless plug. The plugged port is intended for use with an optional thermometer (MT514). Also compatible with shielded thermowell for digital temperature controller probes (FE622).

Speidel Quality Features:

  • Rubber Lid Gaskets: Rubber gaskets are much thicker than the traditional clear vinyl gaskets, which along with their extruded manufacturing process provide a much better seal with the tanks wall. They're seamless and more oxygen resistant than the clear gaskets. That means better protection for your wines!

  • Weld Quality - Speidel's robotic-arm laser welders create flawless stainless to stainless junctions that look and feel more like a taped fabric seam than a traditional weld. Ultra high-quality welds leave no chance for residual product to harbor spoilage organisms.

  • Interior Finish - Speidel tanks feature an ultra-smooth 2R rated interior surface which effectively resists the build-up of tartarate residues. Clean your tanks with cold water after cold stabilization! Say goodbye to harsh cleaning chemicals and expensive CIP systems!

  • Warranty - Speidel-Behaelter, GmbH backs up each and every tank with an industry-leading 25 year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. And, as a 5th generation manufacturer, you can be confident they'll be around to honor that warranty should the need arise.

Tank Dimensions - 550mm D x 999mm H (21.6" D x 39.3" H)

Note: Over tightening the airlock / orange bulk head can cause it to crack. Only thread the airlock down until it feels snug. Do not over tighten.

Has anyone used a cooling snake with one of these variable volume tanks? Are there two ports in the lid (for cooling snake + airlock) or would an additional port need to be drilled?
Ryan F on Sep 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There are only ports in the lid for the airlock so you would need to drill an extra hole to accommodate the snake.
how to ferment wine in spidel tank? what precautions to be aware of?
Vincent Tedeschi on Jun 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: We love our Spiedel tanks. The variable lids allow us to keep very little air space, even after each racking as the resulting volumes change. Their air seals are very reliable and hold pressure well. We position each tank on it’s own 3 ft x 3 ft pallet and use an electric Warehouse forklift to move them. This also permits us to rack one tank into another by raising it above the empty tank and gently release the wine through the bottom spigot. (We have also pumped wine from one tank to another with no problems.) We have had problems with the orange lid bungs. Their thread design often causes cracks in the threads and air gets in. As a result, we leave the marble air lock in them or use a silicon bung in the lid. Cleanup is a breeze with a power washer.
Hi will a regular 1.5 inch marble airlock(for variable capacity tanks) work with this tank? Thanks!
Graham R on Aug 5, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I think that is better answered from MoreWine. I have yet to get a marble air lock. I just us my carboy airlocks with the stopper that fits into a 6 gallon glass carboy. If you start the fermentation off in this vessel you'll have to add a food grade tube to the airlock and submerge the other end into a bucket of water. The top of this vessel blew off twice until I decided to try the home made airlock. Have to have a great deal of volume for the gases on that size of tank.
Can this tank be used for long term wine storage, ie up to 12 months?
Jeff R on Dec 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Just as Stephanie says, you can use this for long term storage as long as you check on the seal of the inner tube that seals the lid. Temperature changes will shrink the gas inside the tube which can cause the lid to lower itself. A gas regulator system is the best way to keep the tube full. Otherwise you will want to check it every week or two, especially as the weather gets colder or if there is a big temperature swing throughout the day in your region.
Are these variable volume tanks suitable for fermentation? How much volume to deduct from the stated capacity to account for headspace? I’m looking for something to ferment ~30 gallon batches.
Ryan F on Sep 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You can absolutely use these for 30 gallon batches. Since the fermentation is constantly pushing out CO2 you do not need to worry about having too much headspace. The fermentation will blanket itself in CO2 especially during any punch downs or rousing that you do to degas the fermentation.
Hi, what is the weight of this tank with the lid? Thanks!
Graham R on Aug 5, 2021
BEST ANSWER: 33lbs
