Barleywine - made from barley but can be aged like wine. Our Barleywine has a beautiful copper color, voluptuous body, and inviting smells of malt and hops. But don't let the good looks catch you off guard. This is a powerful beer with a bitter, yet balanced bite. The recipe includes 12 lbs of malt extract with Caravienne and Caramunich malts for steeping. Huge flavor with a good balance between malt and hops. This will age gracefully for years. Not for everyone, but those who like Barley Wines love this recipe.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Not Really Barley Wine
True barley wine is a high octane British beer. This is really an 8% (American) IPA. If you go by the style guides, the alcohol is a little low, and the hops are A) too much and B) wrong types. Don't get me wrong, this kit makes good beer! But a true barely wine should have 1 oz each or less of Fuggles and Kent Goldings. You can also bump up the ETOH by adding 1-2 lbs of dextrose. Also, yeast should be Safale04, or WLP028 (Edinburgh). This kit makes a really good American IPA.

Barley Wine is great beer
I have it in a secondary fermenter now and I did take a taste and good. This is my third kit of the Barely Wine and I believe this is going to be the best.

A solid winner
Have brewed this kit each of the past three years, cellaring some from each batch. (This ages very nicely.) Definitely plan to keep this in my brewing rotation.

This is excellent
If you're a barley wine fan, you will love it. Plenty of hops to balance the malt. I added a couple of ounces of American oak chips in the secondary for about a month and it came out extremely well. Definitely will make this again.

what a great tasting beer
never drank a barley wine. I brewed it last August and got into it and it was very good. then tried a store bought bottle, liked mine best and didn't add anything and had a 7.86 abv. got make this a favorite. thumbs up on this one.

This is great stuff
I added six pounds of wild flower honey towards the end of fermentation and every barley wine fan I know loves it. Not for everyone but it's good if you like the style.

Good Now, but Will Get Better with Age
Barley Wine, like single malt Scotch, may be an acquired taste, and is well worth the effort, especially if you prefer stronger more flavorful beer. Barley Wine needs to age. A local brewery had a 'vertical' BW tasting several years ago, where we tasted 10 samples [from younger to older] of a BW that had been aged from 1-10 years. Every year was noticeably better than the previous year. I tried a bottle of this kit after six weeks, and it is good now, and I think it will become excellent. I will wait until Christmas for the next taste. Stay tuned. Better yet, don't wait for me, go make your own batch now. It will be worth it!
