Description

  • One of our most complex recipe kits, this clone of North Coast Brewing Co.'s Old Rasputin continues to improve the longer it's aged
  • Includes Apollo™, Northern Brewer, and Willamette hops
  • Estimated ABV: 8.5-10%
  • Estimated IBUs: 70-80
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Wow.  If you've never tried the North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin, then you need to brew our clone version of it.  If you have tried the North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin, then you know what we're talking about, and need to brew our clone version of it!

This imperial stout is one of our most complex recipe kits.  Not only because of the ingredients invovled (12 pounds of base malt, 5 specialty malts, and 3 different hops!), but because of the mouthfeel, flavors, and aromas it provides.  The all grain kit even includes 2 pounds of dry malt extract because the amount of malt simply won't fit in your average size mash tun!

This is also one of those beers that continues to improve the longer it's allowed to age.  Our Old Bearded Stout is bold, boasting an incredible roasty, bready flavors, and aromas of chocolate and coffee.  Coming in at right around 8.9%, this is a great beer to "just have one" of, but we won't blame you if you go for a second!

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity:1.083-93
  • SRM (Color Range): 38-39
  • IBUs: 70-80
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 8.5-10%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. All grains will come milled, unless you select unmilled base malts.

I hope you will mill the grain for best results in my grainfather brewing system. I’m surprised there is no place to add a not in the ordering process.

When to add DME and Speciality Grains during brew process? How to prevent blowoff?
Alexander Mohr on Jul 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Alexander - Both the ingredient sheet and recipe can be found on the product's web-page below the description. Andrew is correct though, it doesn't really matter when you add the DME but we recommend at 20-10min during the boil.
What kind of two-row does this kit ship with?
Kyle Yakopovich on Aug 14, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Mine came with Briess Pale Ale 2-row both times I bought it
has anyone added vanilla bean to this recipe?
Karl Knudsen on Sep 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have added Madagascar bourbon vanilla paste for last 5 of boil . I think I did 2 tblspoons per 5 gallons. It was noticeable and added a pleasant complexity. I also put it on nitrogen and really brought the whole thing together.

Nearly identical to Old Rasputin, and better!
This recipe is stunningly close to actual Old Rasputin (OR). I did a side by side comparison and there were only two very subtle differences: 1) OR head was slightly more beige, 2) Old Bearded had a very small additional maltiness that actually made it SUPERIOR to OB. Fantastic clone, definitely going to be on regular rotation

could have been me
The rating may not be the beer. It may have been me and the process I used.

Not sure what I might have done on this. The final taste was great, but I am not getting it to carbonate much. I realize that it may not carbonate a lot because of the style, but mine almost has a flat taste. I think next time, I would cut back on the amount of malt extract that I used. I'm letting it sit as I think it will only improve. It is very silky, smooth with a good cocoa taste to it.

First stout brewed
Originally bought this as an extract kit, but then purchased a mash tun and ended up going all grain, my first attempt. While the mash temp was lower by 10 degrees and I forgot to add the specialty grains to the mash, no wonder it seemed I had too much water, this beer came out fantastic! Given a 4 but would probably be a 5 if I didn't screw the recipe up.

I was ready to dump it after I saw the OG being very low, as I did not come close to the desired OG. However, I let it ferment and 3 weeks later I bottled it. While the mouthfeel was a bit then, the flavor was spot on. It was roasted coffee with a toffee or caramel sweetness. ABV was about 6.5%, easy drinking with a great head! Smooth, just like Rasputin
This is a brilliant brew! Silky smooth, and a stout that you have plenty of, and not get overpowered by it.

Of note, I bottle with sugar, and the yeast is very lazy. After a month in the bottle, I still did not have carbonization. So, I increased the temperature in the room, and swirled (re-suspended) the yeast every two days for 6 days. Left the brew for another week, and then perfect carbonation.

Great Imp Stout
Really like this beer. Nice to be able to easily compare to the original. The flavors all blend nicely, not too much of any one flavor. Easy drinking and fun to make. Will make again and allow to age a little more before drinking.

Amazing clone kit!
Wow! Was beyond impressed with this kit. Did a side by side comparison of the old bearded to the old Rasputin, and dam it was dead on! My abv was a bit lower but that due to an efficiency issue on my end.
Flavor was amazing, we will be brewing this one again here really shortly! Only thing I would change, remove dme and add more grain since my equipment can handle the grain.
