Description

(Makes 5 Gallons) We recently had a simple, yet exciting idea: What if we brewed the same recipe, used the same yeast, but changed one thing - the flavor, aroma, and dry hop additions using one hop varietal. That way we could take two beers that are close to identical and pick out the differences in just the hop flavors and aromas! And thus, the Single Hop Experiment was born. This recipe is based off of a simple Pale Ale: Ultralight malt extract, Crystal 15L, Magnum bittering hops, and then a single other hop for the rest of the additions. The malt in this recipe is basic and fairly neutral, the bittering clean and consistent, but the flavor and aroma from the late hop additions will vary; sometimes dramatically! Ever wanted to know what your favorite hop really is? Brew a few of these different Single Hop Experiment recipes to find out!

Please Note: In order to better serve our customers, we are now offering our extract recipe kits with either Liquid Malt Extract (LME) or Dried Malt Extract (DME). The majority of our DME kits were converted from the LME version, which is why you may notice slight variances in the extract names and quantities on your recipe sheet. You may also find that your Specific Gravity and ABV% are slightly higher if you choose DME. Whether LME or DME, add all extracts provided according to the recipe sheet. For further details, please reference the conversion chart below.

Very Smooth
This was my first single hop batch. This columbus hopped beer is very smooth and easy to drink. I'm relatively new to home brewing with 21 batches "in the bucket" and find the single hop series to be a great way to get familiar with the different hop varieties. I have another single hop (chinook) in the "bucket" and am looking forward to trying others. If you are not a hop expert, you can't go wrong with this one as a starter. My only concern is that I am not able to maintain samples from batch to batch for true comparison (of course, that is my problem). I guess one should not apologize for making a good, drinkable beer.

Great beer!
I am finishing up the last few bottles and am ordering another kit. Nice fruity aroma. I thought it was like apricots with a nice bitterness, not too strong. My family, friends, neighbors and co-workers all loved. Best I have had.
