Description

Distilled hop oil is an amazing new product we are making available to homebrewers.  Distilled hop oil varies from other oils in that it is produced from fresh hops, as opposed to dried and processed pellets.  Distilled hop oil delivers the same wet hop character that was previously only possible to acquire with the use of freshly harvested hops.  The oil is extremely shelf stable, so you can now brew a consistant fresh hop IPA all year long. Extremely volatile, this oil should only be used for aromatic applications; typically applied at bottling/kegging.

Distilled hop oil is very potent; add to taste. We recommend using roughly 0.5-1 ml per 5 gallon batch, if replacing 50-100% of a dry hop, added directly to the beer prior to bottling or during kegging. Be careful to not push off the volatile aromatic compounds (disturb the beer as little as possible and reduce oxygen exposure). Most staff members here found that 1ml per 5 gallons was "too hoppy" when replacing 100% of the dry hop.  Hop heads (myself included), found that the 1 ml per 5 gallon dosage gave a pungent, fresh, pleasurable and unique hop experience.  Tasting these oils is as close to being in Yakima for hop harvest as possible!

Hi For the Chinook distilled hop oil, how many IBU'S does it add if I add it directly to the boil?
Solomon Cantwell on Jun 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I do not suggest adding this product to the boil for bittering purposes because it is extremely volatile and will boil off the aromatic compounds. Instead, you should use a hop extract, which is intended for bittering.
Should the oil be refrigerated? Or is it OK to leave at room temperature?
Rob Jenkins on Jul 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I would refrigerate just err on the side of caution.
Is this okay to use 1 year old. I knew I had it a while and came up with a plan to use it. The beer is a little funky. Not sure it it was the beer or the 1 year old hop oil. It has been in a kitchen drawer. Do you think I did a bad by using it?
jeremy b on Aug 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Jeremy, it's hard to no where the funk came from. We recommend using the ingredients as quick as possible. The fresher the ingredients the better the beer. You're welcome to contact our customer service team to discuss, 1(800) 600-0033 or support@moreflavor.com.

Potent Source of Hop Aroma but Difficult to Use
Very potent source of hop aroma. I added to a California Common Ale that needed a bit more hop aroma, and it worked well for that. My main concern is the inconvenient packaging. You will need a calibrated medicine dropper to dispense it. And the tiny glass bottle tips over easily. It would be much better if the product were packaged in a small bottle with drop-dispensing top, like eye drops. These are offered in very small sizes (1-2 mL), made of inert polypropylene or polyethylene, and come in color-coded tops.

Oily residue
This added a great hop aroma to my batch of 5 gallons but it left an oily residue in the mouth that just wouldn’t go away.

Was Excited to Try This But...
I was really looking forward to brewing with this but when I received it I couldn't help but notice the cancer warning on the front of the package. I know it says it on the website description but I figured it was something stupid like the plastic lid or something. Spirodiclofen is some hard core insecticide that this hop oil might contain and since this is super concentrated it might contain a lot of the chemical. I still might use it but I won't be buying this again unless I find an organic version.

Mostly aroma a little dab will do ya.
Tried a very small amount in a non hoppy commercial beer, adds aroma, not much hop taste or bitterness.

No Aroma
Was very interested in this as an alternative to multiple dry hops. When I cracked the lid I was really excited because my whole garage smelled like hops instantaneously! (would make a nice air freshener). Unfortunately adding to the keg (1 ml in 5g)resulted in absolutely no hop aroma in my fully carb'd beer. I had plenty of hops in the boil so still came out with a decently bitter IPA, but the nose I was expecting was non-existent.
I will likely try again.

On the fence
If you haven't tried this before i'd highly encourage to try it to at least see if you like it. I'm not sure i see this as a replacement for dry hopping, but more of adding a mega dose of aroma.

I used this as part of a big IPA (200+ calculated IBUs with 1lb hops per 5G). I reduced my dry hop by half and added a full 1mL to the keg. The resulting product is hoppier than anything you can buy. It actually numbs my tongue a little.

It's potent stuff. I got some on my finger and it smelled for an entire day like i was intimate with a hop plant.

To me it boosts the aroma big time. I don't think it adds much in the way of flavor or bitterness though.

FYI its not alcohol soluble if you're trying to dilute it. Oops.

No aroma
I brew 2 IPA and used chinook and eldorado hop oil (1ml in each keg with 18 liters of beer) and I also didn`t do dry hop for comparing what really flavor can give hop oil, so there was no difference between hop oiled beer and without it. So I don`t understand about what hoppy rich flavor people said(

Finally a way to boost hop nose/flavor in the keg!!
I was apprehensive about trying this product due to some of the reviews I read. The reviews said there was a strange flavor that overpowered the beer. Not at all what I experienced! I used the 1 ml split between two 5 gallon kegs. The effect just keeps getting better as beer is consumed and the remaining contents get a chance to mellow. Now we need more varieties of oil. Chinook was great and I have yet to try my ElDorado oil. It would be great to se Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic or even Lemon Drop.
