Finally - Accurate & Affordable Free SO2 Testing!

In winemaking, Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important and effective tools in the winemaker's arsenal for protecting against the effects of oxidative or microbial spoilage. Unfortunately, over time any SO2 added to a wine will be consumed due to its interaction with the very things that it is protecting the wine from. The ability to accurately monitor the amount of SO2 remaining available in a wine to protect it - termed Free SO2 - is hugely important when it comes to ensuring that the wine makes it through the aging process safely.

For years MoreWine! has offered a variety of methods for testing the level of Free SO2 in a wine. Until now, winemakers had to make a choice between inexpensive test kits which lacked accuracy and kits which are highly accurate but cost hundreds of dollars. Now MoreWine! has developed an inexpensive AND accurate test kit which we feel has a place in every home winery.

Based on the exact same science as our original Aeration-Oxidation test kit, our new Economy Aeration-Oxidation kit offers a high degree of accuracy for a fraction of the price. Aeration-Oxidation is the exact same testing method used in thousands of commercial wineries and wine analysis laboratories around the world. It is time-tested and proven accurate and is simple to perform. Our kit includes:

  • All the glassware and tubing needed to set up a 2-chamber test apparatus
  • Pipettes to accurately measure your wine sample and chemicals
  • An aspiration pump to drive the chemical reaction in the test method
  • Enough chemical reagents to run 2-3 tests
  • Clear and comprehensive instructions for setting up and running the system

PLEASE NOTE: This kit ships with a small bottle of 25% phosphoric acid which is required for the test. At this strength phosphoric acid is considered a hazardous material and we are not certified to ship larger quantities. We recommend that you investigate the possibility of sourcing it locally, through a laboratory supply company. If this is not possible, you can purchase it through us; see part #s MT108DS & MT108BDS. The high cost of these bottles reflects the $20 surcharge which FedEx adds to handle a hazardous shipment. These bottles ship directly from our supplier's warehouse and will take a couple of extra days to arrive.

I am having a color change problem as stated by another reviewer. When i add the SO2 indicator to the hydrogen peroxide, I get a bright pink. When I add the 40mL of distilled water it get pale pink. As per the instructions i add NaOH and can only get a very faded grey tinted water. I tried 3 times, wasting reagents. I decided to run the test anyway on the grayish solution. Nothing happened at all to the color. I dis-guarded the solution. I ran a titret test on another sample of the same white wine and it displayed 23ppm free SO2. Therefore i know I should have seem some color change on the original test. What am i doing wrong, or is my hydrogen peroxide (that i just got with the kit) bad?
Patti D on Jan 21, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Use this kit regularly. I have found that 3% hydrogen peroxide can be purchased from a regular pharmacy or drug store. It is slightly acidic, thus the pink color at the start. Yes, I have to add NaOH to make it neutral (until the pink turns gray). If you can't turn it neutral then either your hydrogen peroxide has become contaminated (this can happen easily if you place the dropper/pipette you used from the acid into the hydrogen peroxide). But if you can get the hydrogen peroxide to neutral by adding NaON but you follow the rest of the instructions and don't get a color change it may be (1) you have no free S02 in your wine or (2) you don't have a good seal on the stoppers, or (3) the glass pipette is pressed down into the glass to far so the gas is not moving from the first to second.
Can I use a pH meter instead SO2 indicator? If yes, please tell me the exact pH for the start and end point of the Aeration-Oxidation process corespondent with the SO2 indicator changing color point.
Ivo M on Jan 8, 2024
BEST ANSWER: Yes, pH should go from about 3 to above 7
Can I use, for the Aueration-Oxidation Free SO2 process, commercial 3% Hydrogen Peroxide for hair dyeing or from a local pharmacy, instead of laboratory Hydrogen Peroxide?

I hate it. Sorry I bought it.
I'm so very sorry that I bought this kit and wasted $134. I fell for the marketing, but this is NOT for the non chemist! It is NOT for the masses. Beside being incredibly difficult to feed thin glass tubes through overtight stoppers and risk serious injury, this test is similar to the crappy TA phenol testing that requires judging green/grey/black color changes. It is slow, tedious and frustrating. A main chemical for the testing is deemed toxic, so you are only given a small sample and you have to find a local chemistry supply shop for a proper amount. Would be nice to have some directions on how to use the fancy burettes that come in the kit. Again, not for the average non-chemist wine maker.

Material substitution problems
They have subbed out the beige stoppers for black ones of a much firmer material. They don't accept the glass tubes and barely can be squeezed into the beakers. My glass broke trying and cut my hand.

Could use better instructions, cautions, and labels
Kit's good, reasonable instructions (they could have been clearer but YouTube to the rescue, and they mention they have a video only at the very end of the instructions). My much bigger complaint was that the phosphoric acid leaked during shipping. It's happily not a higher strength, it got on my hands and it's only at the end of the instructions that it says to immediately go put baking soda on it, so minus 2 stars for packaging and poor placement of the caution statement. Also the smaller reagent bottles should have labels so the hydrochloric and phosphoric acids don't get mixed up.

I am glad I bought it, but I wish there were less expensive burretts.
The instructions are excellent, and endpoint color changes are obvious. My biggest frustration is due to tippiness of the flasks once the tubing is attached. I need to build a tubing support or a base to stabilize the flasks. I wish there was a TA test that was as easy to read.

A great addition to my winemaking equipment
My only previous experience with a lab test like this was over 50 years ago in high school. However, I found the instructions with this kit to be clearly written and easy to understand. Assembling the parts of the apparatus was no problem and I added a simple platform to help hold the vessels. Manipulating the pipettes requires some practice. As an alternative I have acquired a couple of 10mL medicine droppers and keep one for acids, one for bases. Was able to get some more Phosphoric Acid 25% locally, have been doing practice runs and can now produce consistent results. Would definitely recommend this for any home winemaker ready to up their game!

Easier than I thought it would be
My brother is a chemist and helped me with procedures. He had no complaints with the kit, he appreciated the simplicity of it.
Since it is billed as an entry-level economy kit, it would probably be helpful to assume the customer has limited lab experience and generic lab procedure guidelines would be helpful. Do not pour water into acids, rinse with distilled water and air dry, etc..

This is affordable and provides accurate results. I enjoyed putting the system together and running the tests. We have a merlot and a Pinot noir in two fermenters.
