Description

The Fast Ferment is an affordable conical fermenter that allows a brewer or winemaker to collect sediment in the included collection ball for easy removal. Easy to use and more affordable than stainless steel conicals.

During fermentation the bottom valve is left open so that sediment will fall into the collection ball. After fermentation is over the valve is shut and the collection ball can be removed without introducing oxygen into the fermenter. Typically with most small conical fermenters if you let trub dump out the bottom air has to come into to replace that volume.  After dumping sediment or trub the collection ball can be reattached and the valve opened again to allow clean yeast to settle into the ball. That yeast can then be used to ferment your next batch of beer.

If you are a brewer who likes to do a primary and secondary fermenter having a conical that allows you to avoid that transfer is going to save time and reduce oxidation. Made from HDPE plastic care should be taken when cleaning. Only use a chemical cleaner like PBW and do not use an abrasive cleaning pad that could scratch the interior.

Each Fast Ferment Includes:

  • 3 Gallon / 11.3 L Capacity Conical Fast Fermenter
  • Six inch removable threaded top for easy cleaning
  • 5 mm metal stand
  • 3/4 in bottom valve
  • 3/8 in PVC tubing and hose clamp
  • Mason jar adaptor and 4 oz mason jar
  • Airlock

Measurements:

Dimensions metal stand
Overall Height from floor to top of airlock: 26 inches / 66 cm
Overall Height from floor to top of lid: 23 inches / 58.4 cm
Width: 11 inches / 28 cm

Can I use a Thermowell on this?
Arash Mirhosseini on Apr 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The larger Fast Ferments do come with a thermowell. For the smaller conicals you will have to drill a hole to use a thermowell either through the wall of the fermenter or through the lid.

I Want to Love It, But...
The valve is poor quality and the handle sheared off on the third use. This is widely noted in reviews for the $10 replacement valve on A****n. Except for this fault, the product would be great. As it is, I would not buy it again until they fix it.

Good product except for valve setup
I bought this unit even though I had read reviews about leaking valves. So far my oilfield plumbing experience has paid off in no leaks but I can easily see where it could be an issue. There needs to be a redesign with heavier threads of some kind on this product. Other than that the unit works well.

It seems to easy now.
The only negative I can come up with is why did they not make the connection to the fermenter a flanged connection with an o=ring like all the others are. I've found a similar valve that is for flanged fittings on both sides and now just have to find a flange I can screw on the end of the conical.

Along with the fact that you have to clean the flash off of the threads with a razor and the chance of cross-threading the valve onto the body of the conical when you put a lot of Teflon tape on them.

Otherwise I highly recommend it. Especially because it is one of few the conicals you can find for small volumes of beer.

Doesn't Seal Well
Followed the video directions like other reviewers, still didn't get a good seal like other reviewers. Leaks from the mason jar attachment and no air-tight seal on the lid. Next batch I'll try going nuts with the teflon tape to see if it's enough, don't think a product should need this much patching to do what it's made to do though. Maybe it's hit and miss depending on the individual model you get?

Massively Disappointed
Write your review here. It must be at least 20 characters long. Consider whether you would recommend this product and what you like or dislike*To be clear this is NOT a reflection upon Morebeer.com whatsoever*

I bought two of these as my entry point into home brewing and it has been nothing but a colossal mistake. Once they arrived, I planned out my first two brews and watched every video that Fastferment has on their FAQ page to make sure I had set everything up exactly to the manufacturers specifications. A lot of the reviews you will find on these things is that they leak - I have no experienced this. My problems started when my primary fermentation was complete. I needed to dispose of the solids that had collected in the yeast trap/collection jar. On both setups the collection fitting somehow unscrewed the plastic piece house in the valve that holds the actual ball valve in place, wasting tons of my first attempts and making a mess. As I said, I wastched the video explaining that the peice must be screwed in to a flush or beyond flush point - which it was. In order to save my work I had to go by a siphon to transfer to another vessel - which is the exact thing you're supposed to be able to avoid with these setups. I contacted Fastferment through their web page and received confirmation and that I would get a response in 24-48 hours. Never heard from them again.

On my next brew, I went to again remove the sedmiment and the valve was somewhat difficult to close but the handle did eventually turn. Went to unscrew the collection trap and again, liquid poured out again. I then opened and closed the valve and it felt very easy to turn this time. I took off the handle to make sure I didnt miss putting a piece in or something and everything looked fine so I put the handle back on and closed the valve again but the handle ended up breaking off rendering the whole system essenially useless! I again wrote to Fastferment and never heard back from them.

I made a huge mistake in purchasing these products. I understand that not everything is going to work all the time and have all the patience to allow a company to fix their mistakes but Fastferment has horrible customer service. Im stuck with cheaply made fermenters now with nowhwere to turn. I would highly recommend looking for something else and investing your money into a company that manufactures higher quality products with more integrity. If for some reason Fastferment is able to provide a reasonable solution, this review will be updated. about it.

Either defective or poorly designed.
As others have said, it leaks right out of the box. Even the instructions provided tell you to do a "leak test", because the manufacturers know it is prone to leaks. Even with the provided teflon tape, even with some real elbow grease, this thing will leak like wild, rendering the collection jar useless. I will be requesting a refund or replacement. Get the catalyst system if you're attached to the idea of a collection chamber, or if space is an issue, just find another solution. This isn't it.

Mixed Emotions.
Although it seems well-made and durable, it's kind of finicky to use. The collection jar is too small and can be tricky to get to seal. If you empty it during the ferment then you release air back through your must.

The top can be tricky to get to seal as well. You really need one person to hold the fermenter and one to twist the lid.

One thing I really hate is that I can't see through the thick plastic to check on how my ferment is going.

I wish I would have bought a Fermzilla all-rounder instead.

Mostly satisfied
I had read a lot of reviews, so I new what to expect. Out of the box, it does leak, so be sure you follow the instructions and use the included teflon tape.
Because I have a bit of arthritis in my hands, the top lid is difficult to get on and off. Plus, the lid doesn't seal tight, so it also needs teflon tape. It makes for a tight seal, but if you lack strength in your hands, you may have more trouble getting it on and off.
And lastly, it's easy to overtighten the collection jar (glass), and then it's a bear to get off. I tried everything and had to take a hammer to the glass to get it off. Luckily, I have plenty of canning jars, but (if you don't) make sure that you don't over tighten!

Perfect size for small batch brewing. No leaks and I like the use of the mason jar adapter for sediment/yeast harvesting. Excellent product.

Overall not bad. Having everything finished in one fermenting vessel is great. But lid needs more work. Very hard to have it hermetically sealed. Had to use fair amount of teflon tape and do away with a lid gasket, which is a hole plastic tube.
