This light ale recipe is the most basic gluten free kit we offer. An ideal first low gluten brew so you can get an idea of what malt flavors sorghum contributes to beer. This recipe is light and easy drinking.

Gluten-Free beers are a different world when it comes to finding a suitable replacement for the base extract. Celiacs are allergic to the hordein protein found in the base malts such as 2-Row and Pilsner malt. They are also allergic to the gliadin protein found in wheat which is the biggest offender of the two proteins. As a homebrewer your goal is to find a suitable fermentable that can emulate the maltiness in beer.

Our Gluten Free recipes use Sorghum extract for the base fermentables. Hops aggressively cut through the maltiness from sorghum easily. Hop additions in gluten free beers tend to be 40-50% less than normal.

All our gluten-free kits include dry yeast due to the small traces of the gliadin protein found in liquid yeast. (Although lab research has found the yeast metabolize the gliadin protein after fermentation and significantly reduce the ppm present.)

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.045-50

Decent Gluten Free Light Beer, Dry Hopping is a Must!
I'm glad I took a previous reviewer's advice and bought plenty of hops to dry hop with (thanks Benjamin A), after doing so this was a nice fruity refreshing light beer. Otherwise this might taste more like a domestic light beer.

However, one small issue is the starting gravity. The product listing puts this in the Medium (5-7% ABV) category, but for a 5 gallon batch you can expect around 3-3.5% given the 6 lbs of extract they give you. This was also confirmed in Beersmith so that's on me for not checking first. If you want closer to the 5-7% you'll want to pick up an extra 3 or 6 lbs of Sorghum extract.

not bad
This beer cleared up exceptionally well without any finings, so I was quite shocked to encounter a strong yeasty smell once kegged and carbed! The light body made for a refreshing taste if you can get past the odd smell and non-malt flavor. There was also effectively zero head retention. In the future when I make this beer I will use an ounce or two of aroma dry hops, as I expect that will mask the yeasty smell and also hop oils are foam positive and will aid head retention.

Pretty decent beer.
This is a pretty decent beer. I didn't vary from the recipe at all and it turned out nice. I didn't buy this kit for anyone with celiac but my wife try's to really reduce her gluten intake because of other effects. We put this kit on tap and a few glasses after a hot day go down really well. The beer does have a bit of an odd taste, not a bad taste or off-putting, but just not a typical flavor you get from beer. I started squeezing a half a key lime in a glass and it is pretty close to a cerveza, and you don't notice the odd flavor so much. Light, crisp, and refreshing. This beer will be on tap in my home during the summer if not year around. It would make a good base to experiment with different adjuncts. I think a light dry hop will be my first variation.

Just dry hop the bejeesus out of it
Brewed this for some friends who have a gluten sensitivity. Friends who had not had a beer in years were super excited to have it. Had sort of a weird aroma and an aftertaste at end of fermentation that I probably should have expected. Anyway, I dry hopped the finished product with a few ounces of summit, centennial and simcoe and damned if it wasn't a nice refreshing drink.

Not Bad
I have Celiac and this beer is pretty good I would put it up against some of the name brand beers in gluten free arena, I just wish there were an option to pick your own hops

Light and refreshing
My wife has celiac. She likes this one, but I can't really drink it. Like all sorghum beers, it has an strange after taste. Super simple extract recipe. My rating is based on wifes opinion since it's her beer.
