Description

  • Our Signature Series kits offer a selection of crazy, unique beers developed by MoreBeer! customers, associates, and homebrewing legends!
  • Packed with hops in the kettle and finished with fresh oranges in the fermenter, this IPA is primed to explode in your mouth
  • Includes Columbus, Simcoe®, and Centennial hops
  • Estimated ABV: 6.5%
  • Estimated IBUs: 75-80
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Remember your parents scaring you with "Be careful of firecrackers, they can explode in your hand!"  Well let us warn you right now... our new, juicy M-80 IPA is going to explode in your mouth. It's going to be crazy. Flavors going everywhere. Maybe your parents would tell you to use caution and not to make this beer. But your grown up now, making adult decisions (most of the time), and we think you've earned the right to buy a beer kit with a fuse and a lighter. With a slight smile and a wink of the eye, we say "go ahead... have some fun".

Let us tell you about the inner workings of this bomb. Sure it has big IPA malt, but you want to know about the hops. It starts with an unreasonable amount of Simcoe®, Columbus, and Centennial hops. By themselves these are all explosive hops, but together they combine to bring true, huge IPA hop flavor.  Because of the similarity of hops, one MoreBeer! staffer dubbed it a mini "Pliny The Elder... but with orange". High praise indeed.

Did you just say Orange? Well done sir, good paying attention. What really sets this IPA apart from the masses is that the recipe calls for you to cut up and add three fresh oranges into the fermenter. Crazy? We thought so. But that is what we love about our Signature Series of Beer Kits, a selection of crazy, unique beers that really stand out. M-80 IPA was designed and created by your fellow homebrewer, Carlos Musquez. We do admit he went a little AWOL on this kit and into uncharted territory, but we love a rebel. Being a graphic designer he also designed the very cool matching bottle labels. Bring a labeled six pack to your next party and you might be dubbed "The Bomb".

You will need to supply the three fresh oranges... we'd ship them to you, but they would get a little squishy.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.059-64
  • SRM (Color Range): 7
  • IBUs: 75-80
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 6.5%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. All included steeping grains will come milled.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Looking for a high IBU, 5-ish% alcohol beer. I like that it was compared to Pliney the Elder.

Anybody make this without racking to secondary? Just dry hopped and oranges in primary?
Ariel F. on Aug 24, 2018
How many yeast packages does it take?
Valentina Roel on Jan 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Valentina, it was a while ago that I brewed it, but I don't recall using more than one packet of dry yeast (Safeale 05 which what I use for all beers in this style.
Do people think adding a different fruit (e.g., pineapple) would still work with this brew?
Ariel F. on Apr 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I've had good luck adding ruby red grapefruit and separately yuzu a Japanese grapefruit. I've added pulp (but you can only do that for a couple of days and then take it out before it goes bad) and added the zest from the outer skin. Both ways seem to add something interesting to the flavor. This is a good beer to experiment with. enjoy!

Love this beer. I’ve been insulted with folks telling me that my home brew, this brew, is as good as commercial microbrews. I let them know that this is better.

Loved it!!!
Have brewed this kit twice and had very favorable results both times!
With the first batch, a failure to close a spigot on the fermentation carboy during transfer from boil kettle resulted in losing about 2 gals before I recognized my mistake. This error led me to name the first batch "Open Sipot IPA".
But aside from human error, this is an incredible kit

Favorite Kit!!!
I got my first M-80 kit because it was on sale, but since them I have very purposely intended to make it my "house" IPA!!!
Brewed extract kit exactly per instructions, sanitizing orange cubes in vodka, and it is an incredible beer loved by all who have tasted it.

Great Value
This has become a go-to everytime I order. I've brewed it at least 12 times. It's great if you follow directions, or you can save some of the hops (and $) for other batches if you wish. However, the OG tends to be a bit higher with the extract version than the all-grain version of the same kit. Either way, its way cheaper for the kit than the ingredients separated!
