Does anyone know if this bar works with the "Compact Magnetic Stir Plate" sold on this site? That one comes with a 1" bar, but I'd like to know if it can handle the 2" one without throwing it.
BEST ANSWER:I have a small build it yourself stir plate and the 2" bar gets thrown easily. That said, the compact stir plate on this site looks sturdier and may have a stronger magnet which can handle the 2" bar.

The bottom of an Erlenmeyer flask is not flat, that is one reason a fully flat magnet (type C) will not be a good choice. What is needed is a magnet that is made with a Pivot Ring which is a type B stir magnet. This will work on the concave bottom of the flask
In short the issue is simple: Stir bars are magnetized themselves. This is why a 2"-Stir bar like this one does not work well with a smaller stirplate like the Wart Whipper by Kegland. I know because I bought two 2" Stir bars, but the Wort Whipper comes wit a 1" bar. The 1" bar works well provided that it is on a semi-flat or concaved, not convex, surface; like the bottom of a Farro Glass Carboy for example. The 2" bar doesn't like to mesh, or bond, with the internal magnets on the Wort Whipper. The stir bar itself is fine, but a Type B Stir Bar which has a "ring" around the center which raises the stir bar off of the bottom of the vessel and thereby allowing the stir-bar to work on a area with only a small pocket(s) of flatness.
I bought the two inch bar about a year ago and like everyone else says it gets thrown. I have found that turning the stir plate off, cranking the speed all the way up, setting the flask with starter and bar on the stir plate and sliding it around in a circle before setting it in the center of the plate then turn it on gets it working most of the time. forget trying to start off slow and speed it up, I just go straight to full speed. I noticed the 1" bar has a ring around the middle that would reduce the contact area with the bottom of the flask, maybe the 2" bar needs the same.
It never worked with my stir plate. Every time I turned it up the speed of the plate, the bar would fly off and stay on the side of the flask. Not what I thought it would be.

Unusable with Hanna Magentic Stir Plate
I have only ever used the Hanna Magnetic Stir plate sold by Morebeer, so I am not entirely sure if maybe it's a stir plate issue, but as others have noted, this is unusable. It spins for a few second and then gets thrown. I am guessing due to it's irregular surface. Stick with the 1 inch bar as it does not have this problem at all.
I have an old stir plate, but I could not get this bar to spin. Not sure which is nut functioning, but after reading the other reviews I'm thinking it's the bar.
I suspect the problems I had with this larger bar getting thrown were stir plate issues rather than anything wrong with this perfectly good looking bar. I did end up switching back to a smaller bar in the end though
I agree with many reviewers that this 2" bar is thrown very easily. I had to be extremely careful bringing it up to speed and even then it would only work at a fairly low RPM resulting in a unimpressive vortex. I thought it was bad balancing/centering of the magnet on my home-made stir plate, but I decided to try the 1" version before re-engineering the stir plate. I'm glad I did because the 1" version works GREAT, it's nearly impossible to throw and the resultant vortex is excellent even on my last 5 liter starter (in 5L flask).
I've read that it's designed for larger sized flasks and that you need a larger stir bar to do larger starters. For me this was not the case.
I own the 5000ml flask sold by MoreBeer and the Hanna Instruments 190M-1 stir plate. I can not get a good vortex using this stir bar. I have to spin at a very low RPM in order to keep it from throwing, and it barely makes a cone that breaks surface tension. I have a much better vortex with a standard 1" smooth stir bar running at a higher RPM.
It doesn't appear that the stir bar is defective and it didn't break while using it, but a well constructed item that doesn't do the job is still useless to me. So my rating is on the use of the item and not its construction. Keep that in mind.
this stir bar works alright but only at low RPM's every time ive tried to crank up the RPM's on my stir plate it throws the bar.. my advise would be just use the small ones havnt had any problems out of them
This is a great bar for use with larger starters, 2L & up. I purchased a cheaper 2" bar online, but I had issues with it being thrown. This one has worked like a charm.
I use this stir bar with a 5000 ml flask, and it works quite well. It is a little finicky to get going because the positioning on the flask can throw it off, but once I get it set I have no problems and generally don't have to keep an eye on it.
I have tried the smaller bars, but when making very large starters they just don't seem to generate enough activity and I can see yeast settling on the outer edges of the flask.
I have had no issues with this in conjuction with my stirplate! Perfect size for a 2000mL flask! Just be careful both when placing it into the flask and when pitching your yeast as so it doesnt go in with the yeast!
I've used - or should I say - tried to use this stir bar in 3 different Erlenmeyer flasks. And I couldn't even get this stir bar to stay rotating for more than 10 seconds. When it comes to stir bars I've found that size does matter, and smaller is better. Get the 1 inch bars and avoid the stabilizing ring. They can go high rpm and create a vortex easily.
