Very disappointing

Stopped working on maybe 3rd or 4th use. The power knob does not click on or off. LED light is on while plugged in but motor does not engage.

Great for starters

I have only used it once but it worked great even with my giant 5,000ml flask. This was my first time doing a starter this way. I have to say it's way easier than coming by and stirring every once in a while. seems to be a very solid unit so we'll see if it's still running in a few years.

Good quality

The other generic stir plate that MoreBeer sells broke after a couple years of fairly infrequent use. Decided I’d pay a little more, and this is of much better quality and has more power than the other stirrer. I like the small footprint and it’s much quieter. Stirring a 2L flask with a vortex is completely silent. Great so far.

Great Stir Plate - Works with large starters

I have 2 of these, and have had one of them for about 4 years. The older one is still going great, even after being dropped on a concrete floor and otherwise treated less than spectacularly. I regularly make starters of 3 to 4 liters in a 5 liter flask on these, and they work perfectly.

Decent stir plate

Bought this model 11 YEARS AGO and it's just now looking like it's feeling its age and needs to be replaced. In that time it's stirred probably 150 starters, many of them 2L. With that kind of dependability, I'll be buying another one soon.

Not very powerful

Unfortunately this stir plate did not list in the description that it was not useful beyond 1L. After opening the instructions and reading other reviews, I see it is designed for 1L and not larger. I am returning the item so that I can purchase a larger starter. I gave three stars because MoreBeer should have been better about listing specific power details in the description, but otherwise works fine.

Quality in a small package

I've been using this for nearly a year and it works great. I started off using a 2L erlenmeyer flask with a 1" stir bar. This product worked great.

I recently upgraded to a 5L erlenmeyer with a 2" stir bar and while it does an adequate job, the flask is just much bigger than the stir plate and it takes me a while to get the stir bar going properly, so it may be a little undersized for my needs.

BL - most folks will find this more than sufficient for normal use.

Worked better than expected!

I was given a gift of my first dry yeast. As a new brewer, I am a little lost sometimes. I counseled with the Concord store staff & was convinced a yeast starter would be the superior way to get things started but it would require a little more capital investment. This stir plate & a yeast started kit containing the Erlenmeyer flask would be the products I would need. After consideration about my need & my budget I chanced this purchase. The More Beer "No Hassle Return" was a sell point for me! I was going to purchase this & try it at their risk! They could not have made my decision any easier!

I have NEVER been sorry about this purchase! Now, I use it for every yeast pitch for my wort. I am a very small brewer with 5 gallons of wort so the 1000ml flask is all I presently need.

In my home-brew club, I recommend that yeast starters always be made & if you don't have this equipment, GET IT!

Easy and convenient

This was my first starter and the Hanna stir plate was literally plug and play. Once I cooled my DME (2 Liters with 1/2 cup of DME), I dropped in my White Labs WPL002. It was a little clumpy, but I understand the English Ale typically is clumpy, which was a surprise to me. I left the stir plate on for about 18 hours, then let it settle and decanted prior to dropping it into the chilled wort. IT was a great step for my brewing process. Fermentation was active within the first 12 hours.

The stir plate ran well all night and was just easy and effective.

Stir plate works well. I tried to use for a 5L starter and it took some doing to get things to work. If you stick to 2L or less it works great.

Good up to 2L

Worked great up to 2L. But for a 3L starter in a 1 gallon jug, not enough power to stir it. Note the user's manual states that 1L is the maximum recommended site, so beware.

The advertising on this web site does not mention the size limitation, and the stir plate would be more valuable if it could handle larger sizes. I will try it with a 5L Erlenmeyer flask which may have better stirring properties than a 1 gallon jug and see how that works. Otherwise I may need to buy a larger stir plate to handle large starters.

Works great

This is amazingly simple, yet effective. It kept the starter active up until the point of pitching. My previous starters settled, got shaken up, settled, etc. The result of stir plate starter led to fermentation starting quicker, more aggressive, and longer lasting. I used on personal honey toast hefe recipe. Taste TBD, but I have high hopes!

A year of use and still going strong.

A year of use hasn't slowed down this stir plate. Traditionally I make a starter every two weeks per month and this plate has never failed me. I have a 2000 ml flask as well as a 5000 ml flask. Although the 5000 ml flask is way oversized for the stir plate, the base holds it just fine and has enough pull for a larger stir bar.

Well worth it. It has stood the test of time.

What a difference

I have made starters previously the old fashioned way and noticed a difference in the activity using them. But I ordered the Hanna Stir Plate to make my starters more quickly and without having to keep feeding them.

My first (and so far only) outing using the stir plate was using a Wyeast 1056 American Ale smack pack. Having used this yeast in the past, it is predictable,, thorough, relatively gentle yeast. After plugging in the date on the pack into BeerSmith, it told me to make a 800 ml starter if I was using a stir plate. I started with about 1L of water, added, 4.5 oz. DME, boiled 20 minutes. After cooling, I pitched the yeast into the starter and let it do it's thing for 48 hours. I then made my brew, ending with 5.5 gallons into the fermenter. Within 3 hours after pitching into the fermenter, activity began. Within 18 hours, the activity was so strong, it clogged my airlock. I had to put a blow-off tube on. Using the stir plate turned a relatively gentle yeast into a monster. Finally, after another 2 1/2 days, the activity slowed enough to put the airlock back on.

I guess you could say the stir plate did it's job. Wow, what a difference.

this plate will move up a yeast starter for greater results beer after beer

I researched stir plates for quite awhile before buying this one. Quality is the top feature here. I brew 10 gallon batches and use a 2000 ml flask. I have used both the 1 and 2 inch stir bars. The one inch bar does fine. This is another quality product from Morebeer.

Small and strong

It does a great job, quietly and unassumingly. I wish it had a bigger body for larger flasks, but my 5L erlenmeyer sits well on it. Use with a 1" or so stir stick, it has no problem. A 2" stick will most likely get thrown.

excellent

I have another stir plate, it dosnt compair. This one can handle a 5 liter flask without any problems. The other unit has way less power, its okay for 1500 ml or less. I bought a cross shaped stir bar off amazon which really makes some serious turbulance. Save money in the long run use 1/3 less packaged yeast, i find thats the most expensive ingredient.

Solid

It's a solid well made stirplate. Mine got dropped on the ground due to some sticky wort on the bottom of a flask and it still works and looks great. It gives you just enough power to run 2-4 Liters of starter and runs super Quite!

plenty of power

This stir plate is well made and has plenty of power.

Although it is most certainly not recommended, I actually use a 5000 ml flask with this stir plate. It is a tight fit, but I have a great place to put it where it does not get disturbed, and I have never had an issue. I do use the larger stir bar for the larger starters, but I have not had a problem with this stir plate even with 4000 ml starters (again - I am sure not recommended).

Great Stir Plate

The Hanna magnetic stir plate works wonderfully. I was somewhat concerned that it would not handle a 2000ml starter as it's not rated that high (it's rated for 1000ml) but operates well at the 2000 ml volume.

Didn't work at first, but works fine now.

This stir plate sid not work when I first recieved it. I took it apart and the magnet that spins was being blocked by a bent component. I pushed the piece that was obstructing the spinning magnet to the side and that solved the problem. I'm giving this 3 stars as this issue would have been easily detected if the company that manufactured it had simply QC'd the product by turning it on before shipping it. With that said, I have used this stir plate dozens of time and it works as advertised.

Works just as advertised

This little stir plate works very well, I run it at 50-75% power for 12-48 hours at a time and I have had no problems with it. I have only had it for a few months and used it around 10 times, but I will follow up as longevity will make the difference between a low end and high end stir plate.

It's pretty quiet, most of the noise I hear is from the magnetic bar spinning on the glass.

The 1 inch bar that comes with it does well with 1 liter starters, but it struggles a bit with 2 liter starters so I wish it came standard with both bars,

Also, I wouldn't try to fit anything larger than a 2000ml flask on it, it's really small which is great for space saving but limits you on starter size. Doing 10 gallon batches this isn't an issue as 2000ml is big enough for a great starter.

Very Good Quality

This magnetic stirrer is very well consructed and operates very smoothly. It is fine for use of up to 2000 ml.flasks. I have put my 5000 ml. flask on it and had to put books on the sides of the stirrer underneath the flask to support the flask as the stirrer is not wide enough for such a large flask, Overall I like the Stirrer very well.

Hanna stir plate

The Hanna stir plate has been working great for me ever since I bought it. The first one I bought wasn't working, Hanna and MoreBeer replaced it without question. I can't imaging brewing again without a proper starter. I now own two of these, both are working great.
