Description

The long awaited MaltZilla is finally here. A large amount of research and development has gone into designing, manufacturing and testing the MaltZilla Diamond Mill.

With an integrated 24V Motor, the MaltZilla is powerful enough to chew through popping corn kernels with ease. The mill works on voltages from 12-30V DC, and the higher the voltage the faster the mill will spin, although 24V is recommended for optimum speed and grist results. The unit does not come with a power supply. When purchasing the unit, you have the option of pairing it with either a power supply with 110V plug (CAN101), or with a 6 ft. long cord with Anderson plug and alligator clips (CAN102). The power supply is straight forward, and allows you to plug the unit into a standard 110V power socket. The alligator clips give you the option to power the unit from a battery.
 
Knurled Steel vs. Diamond Coated Rollers
Historically other mill manufacturers have made grain mills from steel. In some better quality mills they harden the steel so that the knurling stays sharp for longer and continues to draw grain. But even the knurling on hardened steel will go blunt and this reduces the mills ability to draw grain well. Other manufacturers attempt to solve this problem by using geared rollers so the rollers grab the grain slightly better or using 3 rollers whereby the first two rollers with a larger gap force the grain into the third roller. These options in our opinion do not solve the real issue, which is that all of these steel rollers go blunt especially if hard grains are used like wheat or corn.
 
In a commercial setting, it’s not uncommon to send the rollers off to a metalworking factory to re-sharpen and re-knurl, however, this is often uneconomical and a hassle to do. For smaller homebrew customers they might just end up throwing the mill away and purchasing a new one.
 
The MaltZilla Diamond Mill is quite a different mill design, and it’s the first in the world to use diamonds impregnated into the surface of the roller. Even after many tons of grain are processed through the mill, the diamond surface will stay just as sharp as it was on day one. The sharpness of the diamonds really draws grain exceptionally well and even when hard products are used, such as corn, the diamond rollers simply smash it to pieces.
 
Sheer Instead of Chop
Most mills require aggressive knurling to push into the grain and “chop” the grain as it passes through a tight gap, which means your grains are often chopped in half. The MaltZilla works on a different principle and gap setting is not as critical.  The MaltZilla uses impregnated diamonds to grip the surface of the kernel and the friction of pulling the grain through the gap causes a sheering action. When set up correctly, the sheering action can leave the entire husk intact, reducing the chance of stuck sparge and improve efficiency, while still opening the husk enough that the entire contents of the kernel is available to the mashing process. The 70mm diameter rollers are double the diameter of many other mills.  The large diameter significantly improves the crush and assist in drawing the grain in better.
 
Integrated Motor
You generally would not purchase a car without an engine, so why would you purchase a grain mill without a motor? Milling grain has an optimum RPM— too slow and it will take you a long time, too fast and you will end up with excessive powder. The hand crank is really a pain in the backside and using a drill simply doesn’t give you the speed control that you require and often results in burning out your drill. The MaltZilla has an integrated motor with a very constant RPM putting out optimum RPM with an integrated gearbox. The high torque and sealed construction make it ideal for a brewing environment, as the motor is well sealed from moisture and grain dust.
 
The motor is seamlessly integrated into the side body of the mill. Being DC, the motor is safer than higher voltage AC especially in an environment where washing down the area with a hose is likely to happen. The DC motor is also reversible so the direction of spin can be changed based on the polarity. This is particularly useful for over-mount and under-mount installation.
 
Over-Mount and Under-Mount Installation
Traditionally, most other mills just sit on a board where they are moved from one bucket to another. The MaltZilla has multiple different mounting configurations. It can be over-mounted to a board like most mills are, but if you want a seamless finish to your garage/brewing area, you can mount the mill under your counter where it’s concealed and out of the way. Simply lift up a small opening in the top of your benchtop, drop in your hopper, pour in grain and run the mill.  When you are done, remove the hopper and conceal the opening.
 
There is also a PPE MaltZilla Base Board available for over the bucket installation or designing your own mill stand.
 
Grain Hopper
This unit does not come with a grain hopper. We recommend using a large funnel with a shortened spout, or a repurposed gallon-sized water bottle. The MaltZilla Aluminum Hopper is currently in development and available for pre-order.

Will this crush whole kennel corn?

BEST ANSWER: I have finally attempted this and did not succeed at all... One wheel is freewheeling so whole corn kernals tend to just spin. This did not change with any available gap. Too bad though... I was really looking for a "one mill solution".

How quickly does the mill work? i.e. how long to crush per pound, or how long would it take to crush, say, 50 pounds of barley?

BEST ANSWER: with a gap adjustment of 1.25 mm it mills an aproximate of 14.47g/s. 50 pounds are equivalent to 22680 grams, so it will take you 26.1 minutes to mill all that barley
Use the dials to configure gap spacing...don't use an ACTUAL gap measurement tool as it's not the same! I'd post this in a review but I'm not allowed to edit my current review.

Clogs
Went fine at first but as soon as the dust builds up it starts to clog. I quick jab with a scrap of tube to the un-powered roller will get it going again. Tried to clean it but didn't make much of a difference.

Grind is consistent and I'm happy with the speed. would give it a 5 if I could get it to stop clogging.

Great mill with a little DIY
Bought this mill after a long wait. My old way of hand-cranking grains using a 15yr old single roller PhilMill got pretty old once I started making 10 and 15.5 gallon batches, including grain bill heavy big Belgian beers.

After looking at the usual roller mills, plus dedicated motor, this Maltzilla was very competitively priced. I know I could use a Harbor Freight drill but that looked less elegant.

The mill needs 12-24 volts; I had a variable power supply I use for electronics hobby, and that worked great. I would highly suggest getting one of these for cheap from Ebay for like $40 instead of the dedicated (expensive) one available for this unit. That way you can turn the voltage up or down (increase or decrease speed) at will. Plus you will have a nice power supply for other stuff.

Not mentioned anywhere: The connection needed to connect the power is an “Anderson” connector, but a smaller sized one. I just rigged up a quick and dirty set of alligator clips which worked fine, but that is not recommended. A dedicated cable that you can make yourself for <$5 is on the to-do list.

There is available, somewhere, a plywood cut-out for sitting the unit on a bucket. Instead, I just put a couple of slats I had lying around across the bucket and set the mill on there. There is zero vibration in use, so it stays just fine. Also, it comes with, for lack of a better term, adaptor that is supposed to be used to, I think, repurpose one of those big 5gal plastic water cooler jugs as a hopper. Instead, I just sat my big brew funnel in that adapter, and again due to zero vibration, it worked really well. So well that I have no desire to make a dedicated mounting system that will just take up more space. Maybe this funnel system will prevent the jamming issue the other guy had as the grain is directed to the middle of the rollers.

Grinding a full 10gal grain bill only took a few minutes (5-10?), and was entirely hands-off except to refill the funnel/hopper.

I’m very happy I waited to purchase this unit.

Really wanted to like this grain crusher
Returning this Maltzilla grain mill. Defective design? Not sure, but I couldn't get it to work. First 15 lbs crushed ok, then dust from crushed malt started causing free wheel to bind up, stopping crush. Grain gets stuck in the gap, then the drive wheel "sands" it to a size small enough to drop through. Mostly getting dust. Started with 1mm gap, set with feeler gauge, then 1.5mm, then 2mm, until the malt was dropping straight through without crushing (or "sanding"). Attempted to contact Kegland in AU for support/advice. No response was received. Morebeer customer service has been really good and as responsive as they could have been, under the circumstances.

Huge step up from using a hand drill
I've been using a dewalt drill attached to the Cereal Grain crusher and that's been a reliable system but difficult to maintain speed of the drill AND keep the hopper fed unless you have multiple people helping. This Malt Mill makes grain crushing effortless and at an affordable price. Just feed it 24 volts and grab yourself a funnel. It can also work at 12 volts but the process will be a little slower.

4 stars could have been 5 if this mill included a funnel or at least provided a link to a compatible option. I'm still searching for a compatible funnel that will hold more than 1 pound of grain at at time.
