Oak Cubes - French (Medium)

Oak Cubes - French (Medium)

Description

Cubes have a longer contact time than traditional chips do, which make them better for long-term aging of wines and beers. Also, longer contact time means longer extraction of flavors (3-6 months), which leads to a more complex combination of flavors. Chips are usually done giving flavor after a week, thereby contributing a harsh, flat oak flavor.

Our cubes are fire toasted and cut by Stavin, a leading supplier of high-quality oak alternatives to top commercial wineries.

How do these compare to Item #OAK317B4OZ? They both are listed as French Oak cubes, medium toast.
Don J on Aug 14, 2024
BEST ANSWER: At first blush it appears the StaVin is a brand name for a specific process of toasting. The price point for 1 # is just about double. It also appears the flavor(s) to be imparted differ slightly.
Will these cubes fit through the neck of a glass carboy?
Russell C on Feb 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Russell,

Yes, they will fit. From my memory, the causes are roughly 1/3 to 1/4” on a side.

Cheers!
What is the size of these cubes?
Mark C on Apr 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Mark the cubes are about 1 cm on each side They do a good job of imparting a soft oak flavor to the wine
What is the difference between medium and medium + French Oak cubes?
Kathy A on Sep 16, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The medium has a mellower toast. The flavor it imparts is less smokey and more a vanilla taste. I prefer medium to medium+
Will these cubes fit in the stainless tube for barrels?
Bert W on Sep 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: These cubes are 1/4-3/8 inch cubes or rectangular cubes. If you are asking if they will fit through the bung hole in a barrel, the answer is yes. I usually tie them up with cheese cloth and a string or with one of those bags brewers use for hops. I attach a string so that I can pull the cubes out after my wine has enough oak flavor.
I'm wondering, how old were the trees at time of harvest? Or at least, what diameter? I understand that French oak needs more time to fully mature than American oak, ideally at 100+ years age for French.
Adam on Sep 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Adam - I have reached out to our supplier in regard to the age of their French Oak. We will respond in kind when an answer is given.

Barrel-like flavors.
All the cubes are great as I have had excellent results. Very slow process of pulling out the softer characteristics of the named wood. I will start my second year using these cubes.

Excellent oak products
Very easy to use and easy to work around when racking. Doesn't leave behind sediment to clog anything up. I use these for my smaller carboys (1 or 1/2 gallon) when I have a bit more wine that will fit in my larger carboys (which I use Winestix with).

Depending on varietal, I add these along with starting malolactic fermentation, then when malo is done I soak them with an SO2 solution while I transfer wine from malo to "aging" carboy, then rinse with purified water and place back in the new carboy for another several months (total about 3 to 4 months).

Very easy to use and does not result in harsh flavors typically obtained when using chips.
