Went in the garbage after first attempt to use
This one came with a beer kit. It's too short to ft well into the carboy and so in will only exact an ounce or two. On top of that the three piece design compromised the air lock and so it leaks. It's not worth the frustration.
The three pieces don't provide an airtight seal for optimal sample taking, but they do make for easy cleaning and sanitizing. For a piece that is not used with great regularity, I'll overlook slight flaws in performance for the convenience.
Pros- breaks down into 3 parts and is very easy to clean.
Cons- does not hold sample well. It barely fills up to the first 1/3 of the wine thief, and then dribbles out as you're trying to fill your hydrometer. I think something about the 3 part construction keeps it from being airtight and holding a sample. Get yourself a 1 piece construction thief and you'll be a lot happier.
This is exactly what it says it is and works well. Mine does leak a little bit, even with a heavy thumb on the top hole, but we are talking small dribbles. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their fermentation sanitary while monitoring the progress.
Great 3-piece design for cleaning, but takes 3-6 dips to get enough beer in the hydrometer. Now that I use a refractometer, its not as much of an issue as one pull fills my sampling shot glass. Moral of the story, get a refractometer, ditch the hydrometer.
This was recommended by staff. The pieces fit together way too snugly; maybe they'll loosen with time? Biggest gripe is how it drips. It could also be narrower to fit into carboy better.
easy to use for gravity samples. Easy to store due to being a 3 piece design, but it has the same drawbacks as all plastic. Once it scratches, you're playing bacteria roulette. For the price, not bad.
Breaks down for easy cleaning. Just make sure to give it a few seconds for the sample to fill the container before lifting it out of the fermenter, works like a charm.
It's not easy to use. You have to use the best technique to get it working. When you have a low filling level in your carboy, you have to apply some kind of low pressure to get it filled (some pipette or your mouth). Sometimes is way easier to lean your carboy and fill your test tube that way.
After 7-24 days in Secondary carboy, uncertain about specific gravity? Perfect way to check, to see if it is ready to bottle/keg. Breaks down into 3 pieces, toss into Starsan solution, re-assemble and air-dry, then take the sample. Better results every time!
At first it will dribble a bit but if you tilt it a bit, it is not as bad....very easy to clean and sanitize. I did not want to deal with a glass one breaking into my beer and a stainless one is out of the budget for now, so this fits the bill at this time.
I see other people having problems with this. Personally I can let this soak in star san disassembled then assemble it, soak a little longer by pulling star san into it then drain. I then can fill a hydrometer flask with probably 4-5 partial fills of the thief in a 5,6, or 6.5 gallon carboy. I'm sure there is a better thief out there but the price is right for me.
I got this to push my order over the free shipping threshold, so it essentially cost me nothing as it cost less than shipping would have been. So far I am not very impressed with it. The three sections are nice for cleaning and fit together tightly, but it is tough to fill. It doesn't fill with beer very easily when inserted- it only fills a little bit in the tip. I have to move it up and down a few times while covering and uncovering the hole at the top to create a pumping action. Then when I pull it out, it doesn't hold the beer well- it dribbles out as I try to aim it at the measuring cylinder. I haven't used any other beer thiefs, so I don't know how it compares to them, but this is nowhere near the functional quality of the glass pipettes I used to use in chemistry for a similar function.
The 3 pieces do not fit together well enough. When you go to take a sample most of the liquid in the tube drips out. Have to try 4-5 times to get enough liquid for a hydrometer sample.
