The future is here today, and the future is HDPE Fermentation & Storage Tanks from Speidel. Made in Germany from nothing but undyed and food-safe plastic, these tanks are produced with particularly thick walls which preserves the aroma and the alcohol for a markedly long time. The stable carrying handles have been tried and tested for decades and are extremely durable.

Are you tired of carboys? Hate siphoning to transfer? Wish you could ferment larger batches in a single container? Sick of lifting 50lbs by a small metal handle? Done with worrying about shattered glass, injury and lost product? Well then have we got the solution for you!

These heavy duty plastic tanks offer a fantastic fermentation & storage solution at a great price.

Key Features:

  • Heavy duty HDPE construction is durable and resists oxygen transfer. None of the risks of working with glass.
  • Small footprint makes them easy to store - take better advantage of the space you have to dedicate to wine & beer making.
  • Built-in handles make these tanks easy to move, even when full.
  • Large lid opening makes them easy to clean by hand - say goodbye to your carboy brush!
  • All ports seal with gaskets and the vessel can be fully sealed for long-term storage.
  • Includes a spigot and oversized 2-piece Speidel airlock.
  • Designed and manufactured in Germany by Speidel, the makers of our legendary commercial wine tanks

Suggested Applications:

  • 12L: Perfect for storing small lots, making experimental batches and taking some of your beer or wine along with you to your next party.
  • 20L: Ideal for secondary fermentation and storage of 5 gallon batches.
  • 30L: The vessel for fermenting wine kits and 5 gallon batches of beer with plenty of headspace and no need for a blowoff tube.
  • 60L: Perfect for fermenting larger batches of wine or 10 gallon batches of beer in a single container! Only 4" larger in diameter than a 6.5 gallon carboy!
  • 120L: Ferment & Store large batches of anything - your creativity is the only limit!

Approximate Dimensions: 12 in. Diameter x 16.5 in. Height (w/out airlock in place). Mouth is 4.75 in. wide. Note - The maximum temperature that these plastic fermenters can handle is 140F.

FAQ:

  • Can filled containers be carried by the handles?
    • Depending on the weight—barrels up to 30L are no problem—60L is the limit and should not be carried when completely full. The handles have a weight capacity of 30kg (66 lbs).
  • Is there an upper limit on the alcohol content of the stored liquid?
    • In principle, there is not. However, it should be noted that the higher the alcohol content, the faster the seals and, to a lesser extent, the tank itself will wear out.
  • Up to what temperature can the containers be used?
    • For short periods of time the containers can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C (176°F). This temperature should not be exceeded. For longer periods of time the containers can be used at temperatures up to 60°C (140°F).

I’m doing smaller beers now.

I would like to ferment five gallons of beer in this 20L fermenter. Does it have enough head space for five gallons? Or even 5.25:gallons? Or should I purchase the 7.9G fermenter? I’m worried this would leave too much headspace, exposing the beer to the air inside.
Kevin Peffley on Sep 17, 2023
BEST ANSWER: I have fermented many 5-gallons beer batches in this container. However, the headspace is minimal and I find that I cannot add in much extra to account for losses when racking. I would not plan on exceeding 5 gallons by much, especially if you are fermenting something that is high gravity, or will ferment quickly, or produce a lot of krausen. 5.25 gallons could be possible when making Scotch Ale or a lager, due to the cooler, slower fermentation. Personally, I often use this as a secondary fermentation vessel because of the limited headspace. I have the 7.9G as well, and have not had problems with air exposure. As long as the airlock is bubbling, the interior of the container is saturated with CO2, so there is not much risk of oxygen spoiling the flavor as long as you don't leave it in the container for extended amounts of time.
Anyone have experience with lagering in one of these by placing it in a 33-34F fridge? When I tried to do this with another brand of plastic fermenter the gasket around the spigot started leaking (I believe it was because the cold environment made it more rigid and less conforming).

BEST ANSWER: That is why I bought mine. You will need to buy a lid with a co2 port in it. You should also have a pressure guage with a female CO2 quick connect. When you put in the frig, it will start to create a vacumn. so you can't use a bubble relief valve since it will suck back. Apply only 5 lbs of positive Co2 pressure when you place in the fridge. Then check the pressure the next day and apply another 5lbs if needed. after the pressure has stabilized. you need to connect a pressure relief valve, or you can use a bubble relief valve at that point.

Where have you been all of my life.
For years I have used inferior products and done OK. Glass is heavy and hard to clean, this is not. Stainless is expensive, this is not. I even considered making my own with tanks from the tank depot, but I could not get the quality and accessories required for a fair price. Speidel got it right. I own six 5.3 Gallon, three 7.9 Gallon and 2 of the Rectangle 60 L.... I need more. I dig the compactness of the 5.3 Gallon. It fits on a shelf normally used for wine bottles. More wine is a good thing. Buy this.
