The future is here today, and the future is HDPE Fermentation & Storage Tanks from Speidel. Made in Germany from nothing but undyed and food-safe plastic, these tanks are produced with particularly thick walls which preserves the aroma and the alcohol for a markedly long time. The stable carrying handles have been tried and tested for decades and are extremely durable.

Are you tired of carboys? Hate siphoning to transfer? Wish you could ferment larger batches in a single container? Sick of lifting 50lbs by a small metal handle? Done with worrying about shattered glass, injury and lost product? Well then have we got the solution for you!

These heavy duty plastic tanks offer a fantastic fermentation & storage solution at a great price.

Key Features:

  • Heavy duty HDPE construction is durable and resists oxygen transfer. None of the risks of working with glass.
  • Small footprint makes them easy to store - take better advantage of the space you have to dedicate to wine & beer making.
  • Built-in handles make these tanks easy to move, even when full.
  • Large lid opening makes them easy to clean by hand - say goodbye to your carboy brush!
  • All ports seal with gaskets and the vessel can be fully sealed for long-term storage.
  • Includes a spigot, airlock and stopper.
  • Designed and manufactured in Germany by Speidel, the makers of our legendary commercial wine tanks

Suggested Applications:

  • 12L: Perfect for storing small lots and experimental batches or taking some of your beer or wine along with you to your next party.
  • 20L: Ideal for secondary fermentation and storage of 5 gallon batches.
  • 30L: The vessel for fermenting wine kits and 5 gallon batches of beer with plenty of headspace and no need for a blowoff tube.
  • 60L: Perfect for fermenting larger batches of wine or 10 gallon batches of beer in a single container! Only 4" larger in diameter than a 6.5 gallon carboy!
  • 120L: Ferment & Store large batches of anything - your creativity is the only limit!

Approximate Dimensions: 10in Diameter x 14in Height (w/out airlock in place). Note - The maximum temperature that these plastic fermenters can handle is 140F.

FAQ:

  • Can filled containers be carried by the handles?
    • Depending on the weight—barrels up to 30L are no problem—60L is the limit and should not be carried when completely full. The handles have a weight capacity of 30kg (66 lbs).
  • Is there an upper limit on the alcohol content of the stored liquid?
    • In principle, there is not. However, it should be noted that the higher the alcohol content, the faster the seals and, to a lesser extent, the tank itself will wear out.
  • Up to what temperature can the containers be used?
    • For short periods of time the containers can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C (176°F). This temperature should not be exceeded. For longer periods of time the containers can be used at temperatures up to 60°C (140°F).

Stainless Dip Tube for Speidel Plastic Fermenters
Stainless Dip Tube for Speidel Plastic Fermenters
BEST ANSWER: This diptube will absolutely work with the 3 gallon fermenter. It may have to be rotated just a bit up from flush, but that won't cause any problems.
What is the diameter and overall height of the 12L/3.2 gal Speidel fermenter, with the airlock installed?
Walter E on Jul 2, 2022
Would this be large enough for primary fermentation of 3 gallon batches? I'm concerned there may not be adequate headspace. Thanks
Theodore Nowicki on Jan 21, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I use one of these for making 2.5+ gallon gluten-free batches for a neighbor. 3 gallons would likely bubble over during fermentation, particularly with a high OG recipe. You might get by with a blow off set up with some recipes, but the extra cost for that would more than pay for the 20L model.
What is the tubing size for the spigot on the Speidel fermentor?
Jeffrey H on Sep 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Jeffrey, 3/8'' tubing will provide a snug fit on the spigot. You can use 1/2'' but you'll want to use a hose clamp to secure the line.
Could this be used for fermenting vegetables?
Grayson C on Oct 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but there are likely cheaper options without a spigot
Is the 3.2 gal too big for one gallon batches, or will that still be ok?
Joshua S on Jan 10, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I disagree with the other responses. 1 gallon batches are fine in this. The additional headspace isn't of much concern post fermentation as nearly all of the oxygen should have been displaced by CO2 produced during fermentation. As long as the seal is good and you aren't opening the lid to introduce additional oxygen then this vessel is fine.
Has anyone tried a speidel plastic fermentor to make Kombucha?
Charles D. Coskery on Mar 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: These fermenters work great for Kombucha. They are very easy to slip a scoby into and bottle from. The HDPE plastic is great at preventing too much oxygen seeping in, very easy to clean, and you can add boiling water to the empty fermenter to pasteurize it if you want to use a different colony or start another project.
Has anyone notice a smell that they cannot clean out of the fermenter? Mine smells like hops after one use and a thorough cleaning. If you have cleaned the smell out how did you do it? Thanks
Andrew Cohen on May 25, 2022
BEST ANSWER: I've used mine 19 times so far and it has always had a residual smell of hops after cleaning. I haven't noticed any adverse effect.
I'm interested in the blow off tube assembly shown in the picture of the comment from Dennis K. (July 5th). What are those white plastic elbow connectors attached to the grommet on the Speidel that he's using for his blow off tube assembly?
Maurice H on Aug 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hello Maurice - They look to be push-in fittings for RO water filtration systems. Similar to a larger SharkBite fitting. Search John Guest fittings.

Really like it
I don't know how anyone can brew several 5 gallon batches in a year. How can you drink that much beer? My biggest batches are 2.5 gallons, and this fermenter is perfect for that. Secondly, it's very sturdy and it has both a spigot for bottling and a spout on top for either a blowoff tube or an air lock. And it has a handle to tote it. Third, the price was just right, too. I highly recommend it.

Looks nice, holds three gallons, But the smell??
I have used my Speidel 12L fermenter for the first time. After a 10 day ferment I racked to my secondary to carbonate. I cleaned it out well with a sponge and Dawn detergent.

I then sanitized it with star san. It stinks like Hops. Very strong smell. I thought these were food safe and impervious to odors and stains from wine.

Obviously that is not true.

Searching the internet I found the smell is common for these plastic fermenters. Apparently its impossible to get the smell out but folks say it does not affect their beer.

I guess I will be looking for glass or stainless to replace this one.
A waste of $46.

Bought it to replace a flimsy fermonster. I already have 4 of the 7.9 liter Speidel fermenters and it is by far the better choice.

12 liter is great for test batches. Bottom spigot and top designed for air lock make it easy to ferment and rack/age.

Great for small batches.
Great size for fermenting 2.5 gallon batches from my Anvil Foundry 6.5. Easy to clean and very sturdy. No issues with the gaskets and would highly recommend. I have two ssbrewtech buckets but prefer this one over them and will use brewbuckets for sours now and the Spiedels for everything ee

One brew in - seems fine
I'm only using this for small test batches and the first one with the Speidel went fine. Easy to clean and easy to move around. So far no complaints - solid product.

One Didnt Fully Seal...
I bought 3 of these. On one of them the lid on top did not seal properly due to the plastic seam being a bit rough. I found this out after fermentation began so hopefully the finished product isnt an oxidized mess. This would be 5* if the one sealed properly, because the other 2 are the best fermenters ive ever owned.
