Description

Designed for homebrewing, the Tilt hydrometer lets you instantly read your brew's specific gravity and temperature on your compatible Apple iPhone/iPad or Android smartphone/tablet or Tilt Pi. Most Bluetooth 4.0+ devices will work with the Tilt. You can then optionally log data to the cloud using their free Google Sheets template or other 3rd party cloud platforms.

Tilt's goal is to help homebrewers brew better beer. The Tilt hydrometer allows you to check the specific gravity and temperature of your beer while it's fermenting, without ever having to open your fermenter or pour out any of your precious brew. This makes brewing more consistent and easier to track.

Here are some of the new features of the Tilt:

  • Range: Better reception and range. With the increased transmission power your Tilt will send data through larger, thicker-walled fermenters.
  • Precision: Upgraded sensors. With an improved temperature sensor and accelerometer your Tilt will operate with more precision.
  • Efficiency: Reduced power consumption so more brews, less battery changing.
  • New Look: Newly designed custom circuit board and harness.

If using multiple Tilt hydrometers for different batches of fermenting beer you must use a different color for each batch. The app will not read multiple hydrometers of the same color.

Each Tilt comes calibrated and ready to go with a pre-installed battery that lasts 12-24 months depending on usage. Just download the free app, sanitize your Tilt, drop it in your fermenter, and start taking readings with your phone, tablet, or Tilt Pi.

The specific gravity is accurate +/- 0.002 within the Tilt's range of 0.990 to 1.120. The thermometer is accurate +/- 1°F (+/- 0.5°C).

Download the free Tilt app at the Apple App Store or Google Play Store or get the free Tilt Pi download.

What is the diameter, that is, how big an opening in the carboy do you need to fit it through? Also, how do you sanitize it; can you boil it without damaging it? Also, how do you get it out, do you have to turn the carboy upside down?
Roy Westerberg on May 21, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Roy. The diameter is 28mm, or just under 1 1/4". This is well under the 31mm(1 3/16") on my carboy and under the 35mm (1 3/8") i.d. opening on the tri clover fitting atop my grainfather fermenter lid. I clean the outer casing with PBW and sanitize it in Star San. The electronic guts are easily removable so if you wanted I think you could boil the outer polycarbonate (I think) shell. I leave my Tilt in until I rack the beer off to a corny keg, so if you are using a carboy you would just dump the Tilt out with the dregs and trub after fermenting. I hope this helps.
Where does this sit in the wort? Top, middle or bottom. Floating, sinking? I'd like to know the temp of the exact middle of my fermentation, not the bottom or top.
John A on Jun 21, 2023
BEST ANSWER: It floats on top. This should not be an issue with wort temperature. According to White/Zainasheff in their book “Yeast”, it does not matter where you take the temperature reading. “As long as there is any fermentation activity in the fermentor, the temperature will be the same throughout the beer.” At first when I started using the Tilt, I noticed undulations in the temperature. Essentially, I was getting stratification in my chest freezer, which resulted in the beer temp oscillations. I added a small fan inside the chamber and the temperature readings from the Tilt began to read very closely/consistently with the setting on my controller. I believe the Tilt was always accurate and that providing a uniform temperature environment was a key learning/improvement in the quality of the beer.
I think this is more of a question for the manufacturer, but does anyone know if this adjusts SG to wort temperature? And if not, to what temperature is it calibrated?
Lee G on Jun 16, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It will automatically compensate. You will get a report of the fermenting temp and the current gravity. when the fermentation is very active and the Tilt is bouncing around in there it will be temporarily erratic.

I'm addicted to my 2nd Tilt!
This device works exactly as advertised!

I've confirmed it's properly calibrated by cross-referencing it with both a hydrometer and a refractometer.

The reports it generates on google docs does a good job of helping you keep track of fermentation and it's helpful to plan for future fermentation schedules.

Worth the money!
I was on the fence about spending this much money for a floating temp/hydrometer. My only regret is that I didn’t buy one sooner. I have this auto logging with Brewfather and really enjoy being able to watch the fermentation progress. I will buy more.

Not sure about this one.
This is the second tilt I bought and am not sure about this one. The first time I used it it never showed the specific gravity going below 1.018. When I kegged my hydrometer told me I was at 1.009. I tried calibrating it per the web site and now it is in a fermenter with the blue tilt and it is again showing specific gravity at 1.018 while the blue show the gravity at 1.014.

Really like it, but don’t want to calibrate it myself
Overall I like this product as an indicator tool. I don’t trust it yet to be primary measurement tool, but that is only because I had to calibrate it and I worry about user error for things like that. I like being able to quickly get an at a glance view of my fermentation but I still take refracted and hydrometer readings along the way. Im sure as trust develops in the product and my ability to calibrate it properly that I will only use the device. My only complaint is that I don’t like that I need to calibrate the unit out of the box. I think it’s should come calibrated. I worry about user error with tech.

Response from MoreFlavor
What an excellent idea! How cool is it that you can track the fermentation of two different yeast strains in real time with the same exact wort? That's a perfect application of this tool. Glad that you're happy with your purchase. Cheers!

Love it!!
I want many more of these. It does take some time for the app on my phone to connect to it. But that's okay. I haven't used the logging feature yet.

Much easier than drawing out 8 oz of beer to get a measurement. With stainless steel conical fermenters you have to be within 5 feet.
