Description

Italiano to its core, Sangiovese is descended from Calabrese di Montenuovo and Ciliegiolo, the former from the south in Calabria and the latter from the north in Tuscany. Not only is it Italy’s most famous grape, when it comes to truly great varietal wine, the country has something of a monopoly. The greatest examples of Sangiovese are remarkably complex, savory, and rustic. A popular choice in creating magnificent blends, in addition to single-grape varietals, Sangiovese is used in the production of the most celebrated red wines to come from Tuscany, including Chianti, Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Our Italian Sangiovese is a medium-bodied wine that displays notes of sour cherry, strawberry, and prune. A dry red wine with delicate oak character and an alcohol content of 13% by volume. This wine kit includes medium toast French oak chips. Medium toast French oak is subtle and provides refined flavors of custard, chocolate, and spice. French oak in general is often used by winemakers when they want to increase the mouthfeel and complexity of a wine without stepping on or surpressing the fruit.

The VineCo Original Sangiovese is a fantastic way to sample and celebrate Italian winemaking. It’s a great option when you want a glass of red that you can sit back with to sip and savor, letting its personality slowly unfold across your tongue with each taste. Options abound for meals to enjoy with Sangiovese, but pasta with tomato sauce is the easiest (if not most obvious) dish to recommend.

I assume that, after bottling the wine, it is ready to drink. Is there any benefit from bottle aging this wine?
Tim Gravel on May 23, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The wine I made from this kit definitely improved with 3-6 months in the bottle. I was thinking the same way you do and drank a lot of it as soon as it was bottled. That was a mistake. The wine improved greatly with a few months aging in the bottle, drinking well above its price point, and I ended up feeling stupid for drinking most of it too young. I thought this wine was fantastic! Incidentally, the grape concentrate dilution I used was only 80 percent of what was called for in the instructions, making a much more full-bodied wine. In my opinion, the idea that you can make good wine from a kit in a matter of 4-6 weeks is hogwash. Every batch I have made tastes green as hell at those young ages. Six months seems to be a sweet spot.

Got it on sale
Got this on sale for a great price. I bought five of them. I made four batches of wine using slightly less water and distributing extra concentrate from the fifth box to the other four. This really improved the sugar content as well as improving the body of the wine. I added grape stems to the fermenter as well as oak chips that I purchased separately to increase the tannins. The wine is in carboys now for secondary fermentation. So far it is looking promising, but it will be months before I can taste the product.
