Description

The BrewBuilt MiniMax CoolStix is a revolutionary cooling solution for 7 to 14 gallon conical fermenters wtih tri-clamp fittings. The CoolStix is easy to clean, easy to setup, and cools quickly and efficiently. The CoolStix uses a submersible pump to circulate cooling solution and a digital temperature controller to regulate flow. When the controller's temperature probe detects that the fermentation temp is getting too hot, it will power on the submersible pump to run ice water or glycol through the CoolStix. Once the temperature stabilizes, the controller will shut off the pump and stop circulation.

This version of the MiniMax has a longer shaft to accomodate the included blowoff assembly. If your fermenter has a single T.C. ferrule on top, this is the model for you. Includes the necessary tri-clamps and gaskets for assembling, but you will need an additional clamp and gasket to attach the CoolStix to your fermenter.

A cold water source is needed to provide the cooling solution. For maintaining ale temperatures, a cooler or bucket of ice water is sufficient in most cases. For maintaining lager temperatures, we recommend the Icemaster 100 Glycol Chiller.

For a complete kit with submersible pump and temperature controller, check out the BrewBuilt MiniMax CoolStix with Pump Kit.

Is the BrewBuilt MiniMax CoolStix™ for Tri-Clamp Connections (w/ Blowoff) just a longer version of the BrewBuilt MiniMax CoolStix™ for Tri-Clamp without blowoff? I'm curious if the the tee can be removed to utilize more rod length for cooling?

BEST ANSWER: Jared - It appears that is the case, as both have about 20" of exposed cooling, while the blow off version has an overall length of 28 1/4" compared to 22 1/4".
Does this fit in the 14G Blichmann Fermenator with tri-clamp blowoff assembly?

Half the job, half the stars
Can maintain fermentation temps for a 10 gallon batch but can't cold crash it while running solo with an brubuilt icemaster 100 chiller set at -2 C

Works as promised.
I purchased this version of the Coolstix about a year ago but held off providing a review until I had a chance to use it a number of times. It is installed on my SS Brewtech 7 gallon Chronical fermenter and it works like a champ. Holding temps within 1.0 degree.

Love this Brewbuilt Mini Max Coolstix
I live in Florida and only brewed beer using Kveik or Belgium s yeast. Now I can brew an ale using any yeast I want. This fits my Ss Brewtech Chronically perfectly. It’s well made and does the job. It held my wort at 66 degrees within a half degree. I used a 200 gph pump to circulate the water and put a frozen I gallon jug of water about every 12 hours to keep working. Only used enough water to cover pump. Love it.

better than nothing
I am using this in a 1/2bbl SSB chronical, with the standard lid that only has a single 1/2"TC connection. The length is great, goes almost to the dip tube. The disconnects were very handy, and didn't leak. It is pretty easy to clean. And it is a lot cheaper than the FTSs retrofit kits (I already have FTSs for a smaller BME, so I only need the larger lid and coils; but that isn't an option, it's all or nothing).

You can hear the stainless tubing rattle around inside, and it doesn't sound like there's any conductive fluid between the chiller tubing and the outer shell. This design is very inefficient. You're effectively just cooling air inside the shell.
Also, if you plan to use this to finish chilling the wort down to pitching temps, its a pain to pull this thing all the way out, to be able to get the yeast pitch into the same small hole.

It took about 16 hours to get from around 30C to 14C, with a glycol setup. This was not the temp I wanted to pitch at, but didn't want the wort sitting around any longer.

I'm considering taking a grinder to the shell and cutting it off, to allow the beer to be in direct contact with the coil.
If the designer bothered to put any real thought into this, they could have made it just like a long ripple element, or even just a straight fold-over. Then the beer would be in direct contact with the coil, and with significantly great surface area. Or at least fill it with something conductive, not air.

It is better than nothing, but not by much.
I wouldn't buy it again.

Response from MoreFlavor
Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed review. The design of this piece is not as you describe it above. It is a long 3/8" steel pipe, as the inlet, inside of a larger diameter steel pipe that is sealed on the bottom side. This is designed to get direct contact with the liquid inside the fermenter by sending the coldest water to the center of the wort. You are correct that this isn't the most efficient design for cooling wort from 30C down to pitching temps. Being stainless steel does limit the amount of heat exchange you can get. We recommend only using this to exchange heat during a fermentation and then cold crash and we recommend a larger copper chiller for cooling wort.

The rattling sound you hear is likely from air trapped in the cooling tube and causing differences in pressure as it gets pushed around. To fix this you can purge the air from the inside of the coolstix and double check the seals on the inlet side. Hope this helps. Cheers!
