Description

The Malt Muncher Pro from Morebeer! crushes 6 lbs of grain per minute. 

The stainless stand with polypropylene base board allows for a collection bucket to be slid directly underneath. The precise fit between the bucket and stand is designed to contain grain dust.  The bucket features a handle for easily pouring malt into your mashtun and will hold up to 25 lbs of milled grain.  

The MaltMuncher Pro utilizes cold rolled steel rollers for longevity.  The gap can be adjusted on both ends for an even crack. The drive is a heavy duty motor with gear reduction that has plenty of torque for start up.

Coupler: I see in a previous review the coupler had to be replaced. We’re there any revisions to address this?

BEST ANSWER: Hi Aaron - we have note made any changes to the spider coupling on this unit. Although we have seen some reports of customers needing to tighten the coupling, this has not been an issue for the majority of users.
Is the non-driven roller supposed to turn or is it meant to be fixed?

BEST ANSWER: It's suppose to free roll. It should be smooth rolling in both directions. The powered roller obviously only moves with the motor. Also, I posted a fix for this system if you end und finding out that the grinder gets stuck too easily. The designers clearly went with a 3 phase motor (because it's cheaper) and didn't understand how a 3 phase motor works. The design only has a static phase shift so only the first rotation is powered in order to start the motor. That means the motor is just free rolling for one of the 3 phases. Clearly this is a bad design for something that's constantly requiring torque. The fix is to install a VFD. It's more expensive but IMHO it is a requirement for this system.

Also if you want to understand 1 vs 3 phase motors.
have 2 Q's, 1 does it have bushings or bearings, 2 will it do corn and rice??

BEST ANSWER: 1) The data plate on the unit says it has "hardened steel ball bearings". 2) The rollers are 1-1/4" in diameter and I have only done barley, so I don't know if the larger kernel size of corn will cause difficulty. However the gap is easily adjustable for a coarser "crack" then it can be reset to the final size and run through again. Rice should not be a problem assuming it is about the same size as barley.

Overall this has been one of the best homebrewing purchases I have made. I initially had trouble with it jamming, but discovered that if I slowly feed a couple of cups of grain, until I have it continuously grinding, then fill the hopper to the top it will work flawlessly. I think the motor needs to warm up with a gradually increasing load before it will reach it's rated horse power.

BEST ANSWER: At this time we only sell the whole unit completely assembled and cannot sell just the stand or any of the other individual parts or assemblies.
Can I just purchase the connection pieces between the motor and the mill?

Not a smooth purchase experience
The purchase experience was not smooth. The board wholes came in incorrectly and I was not able to attach the board to the the legs. The screws which connects the mill to the two roller were also missing. Issues aside, Technical Support was very helpful and provided me with a RMA for the defective board and the screws.
Board quality is not high, first one came in with incorrect wholes, second one barely matched the wholes in the legs.
Under power, get stuck in the rollers really easy and difficult to reverse and cleanup once it gets stuck.
Need quality review and improvement.
Kudos to Technical Support.

Very under powered
If you turn it off mid-mill (or if it jams, which is also quite frequent) the unit does not have enough power to restart. You must empty the hopper, turn unit over, and hand rotate the rollers in reverse to clear any grain. Only then will it resume operation. This means you must plan for the hopper to be empty before the bucket is moved.
It WILL NOT pass wheat, rye, cara, etc below 0.055" gap. This gap is too big for base malts, resulting in very low conversion. This means you need to set a tall gap for those grains, then reduce the gap to run through again and run the base malts. Doesn't sound like much, but you must remove the hopper, loosen the set bolts, adjust the gap with feeler gauges, and reassemble. Oh, the set bolts drastically change the gap setting, so you have to guess a higher feeler gauge and hope for the intended gap after tightening. If you try to leave the feelers in place while tightening, the rollers pinch tight enough to prevent removal.
Perhaps if they designed this unit with the MM3, the top roller could crack the hard grains and the lower roller could then crush smaller.

Undersized motor/gearbox
Two complaints:
1) It gets stuck while milling the grain. Then one has to struggle to clear out the grain to get it to operate again. Either the gearbox or the motor are undersized making the torque too small. In contrast, a cheap cordless drill from Home Depot attached to a standard homebrew mill never gets stuck.
2) The output slot is not centred on the bucket. If you misplace the bucket a bit, some of the crushed grain spills on the ground. The whole contraption should be longer to allow the correct centering.

Although the idea behind this item is good, it's design is rather sloppy.

Does not like carafoam malt. Binds up and have to tear apart to unstick. Other than that a decent homebrew mill.

Works great
Need to feed slowly when you start or it will jam. Once it is continuously grinding the hopper can be filled to the top and it will grind the whole batch without trouble. It is so nice to have this at my home so that I don't need to rely on the store to do my milling.

Perfect
I had for years used a drill attached to my old crusher and after having my drill die, I decided to make my old mill automated, however everything I needed was either on back-order or looked so dangerous without proper guarding on a huge open wheel. I saw this and it was a no brainier. Now after using it three time to crush my grain bill I am getting a consistent crush and not guessing where I need to hold the trigger on my drill.

Nice addition to brewery
Was smaller than we expected, but did the job. Rollers are easy to adjust, but would not spin at the tightest setting. It will take some more adjustment to get it just right. Overall we were pleased with it.

A Good Addition to the Brewery
MoreBeer did a good job with this mill: the motor is quiet and runs smoothly, the table top looks great, heavy duty power cord supplied, the switch is solid. It's seems to me that MB didn't cut corners to save a few bucks. I have the mill on a dolly so I can roll it around the brewery.

A couple of notes:

1. I brew with brew in a bag method (BIAB). To get good efficiency, BIAB needs a finer grind: 0.030" or tighter. For my first use, I set the gap between the rollers to 0.030", started the mill, then poured in the grain - and the mill stopped cold. It seems that the mill can't grind that fine in one pass. So, I set the roller gap to 0.050", ran the malt through once. I then set the gap to 0.030" and ran the malt through again, this time without a problem. The mill moves the malt through quickly so it's not a huge issue.

2. The mill has marks for the roller gaps on both sides. The marks aren't super accurate and a buyer might want to invest in a set of feeling gauges to check the roller gaps. A future weekend project is to put some tape on the side panels and mark my desired gaps so I don't have to pull off the hopper to set the gaps.

3. I tried replacing the supplied couplings with Lovejoy couplings that have been recommended by some reviewers here and on the motor page. However, when I started the motor, there was a "pockety-pockety" sort of noise that wasn't there with the supplied couplings. As far as I can tell, the Lovejoys (or the installer) introduced some misalignment. So I put the supplied couplings back on - no more pockety. I figure if the couplings start to slip, I can paint on a little Loctite.

4. One fallout from the attempted coupling replacement was that I couldn't manage to replace the supplied tube guard over the shaft. Not shown in the photo is my alternative guard fabricated from some scrap wood pieces.

5. The hopper is fairly small - can't see how you could put 12# of malt in it.
