2.1-3.2 °L - Viking Malt, malty, sweet and nutty notes. Made from 2-row spring barley. Ideal malt for ales and special lagers. Suitable for subtle color correction of regular lagers.
Viking malts are a northern European malt and in order to stay true to style I like to purchase malts that will most closely represent the beer I am making. In the case of this malt it is to make Keptinis

We don’t test diastatic power on Golden Ale, because it isn’t part of the general specification for that quality. Our brewmaster told me that on average Golden Ale has some activity and the diastatic power is about 20 intner -> ~54 WK.

I tested my starting gravity after brewing a batch with this malt and the great western, and with everything else held constant, I noted a slightly lower gravity reading, which I think means there's just less sugar to extract from this grain . . . or it may have been older or dryer - hard to tell exactly. Either way, I guess you get what you pay for.
I just finished off a 55 pound bag of this malt. I used it to make everything from American Pale and Amber ales to English Brown to Milk Stout. Never any problems with efficiency or fermentation. Great color, too. Recommend this to anyone as a go-to base malt.
This is a great base malt, somewhere between pils and 2-row, a great light malt flavor with a low price and great flavor, acts more like pils than 2-row.
Good flavor in a SMASH beer but low efficiency. I ordered milled as usual since I don’t have a mill but knew from the start efficiency would be low since it was mostly husks. Even did a 90 min mash hoping to compensate. Don’t know if that’s bad milling or bad grain but won’t be using again.

Low Efficiency
Just mashed with 10lbs of Viking (75% of mash). Perfect single infusion mash held at 154 for 60min. Was very slow to convert (took 45 min for iodine test to finally show complete conversion). Pre-boil gravity after mash was .013 lower than target (was 1.039 vs. target of 1.052). I've never had a mash be that far off. Not sure what the exp date was, but could not have been very fresh. Maybe they just don't sell enough to keep supplies fresh? Anyhow, will not use Viking again unless freshness/viability can be assured!

It's pale malt
The milling was a little fine, but I definitely prefer too fine to too coarse. I've only used it in stouts so far I think, so I can't speak too much to the color, but I hit my gravity targets, and the flavor is on point. Does its job.
You get what you pay for with cheap malt sometimes. I've tried this in multiple NEIPA and pale ales and the wort is brown even with nothing but this and flaked oats and/or wheat. Very disappointing. I recently did some very small test batches and was able to confirm it was the malt and not another factor.

I ordered 220lb of this malt on a Tuesday, and it was delivered to my door by Saturday. Very happy with the price and the ease of ordering. Just brewed a couple of batches with it last weekend, so waiting to see how it turns out, but the grain appeared and tasted very good!
Crisp and dry at lower steeping temps, great mouthfeel and head retention at middle steeping temps. Love this malt.
I have made multiple batches with the Pale malt and mixed the Pale and Xtra Pale together and have gotten consistent delicious beer with each recipe. I will be buying more. Thanks Viking Malt!
Figured I'd give this a try in a Galaxy hopped pale ale and I wasn't disappointed. Like most pale ale malt, this has more malt character and is a little darker, and it adds a bit more complexity to the flavor. For the price, it can't be beat! Moprebeer rocks!
I brewed a belgian ale with it . After a month, I tried it and didn't think it was all that good. Five months in the cold later, it had gotten excellent. My sister thought it was the best I'd brewed yet
Got the shipment on time and used it in a Russian River Blind Pig clone. It’s still being dry hopped so haven’t tasted it but the OG was almost perfect.
I purchased a sack of this when it was on sale for $25 i think. I have brewed 3 beers using this with the same result, it comes out amber as opposed to the 3 lovibond as the specs suggest. It looked like an amber ale and was far more rich than expected. Still a good product but I wonder if "pale ale malt" from this European maltster means English style.just my two cents and still a good product.
We brewed our first Pale with this grain two weeks ago. It is bottle conditioning now. We force carbonated a liter when we bottled just to try it out. It has a wonderful, smooth malt character with a bit more body and warmth than a traditional Rahr or Briess equivalent.
The price was really great even with the shipping factored in. This was a 2018 harvest and malted in January 2019. Noticed that the appearance of the finished beer is darker than it's Pale Malt designation indicates. Flavor is all there. Almost makes you want to grab a handful put some milk on it and have it for breakfast. Had heard other talk about lower than standard efficiency with this grain. Had no problems hitting my SG's with this with my Robobrew. Do recommend that you mill a handful and adjust your settings if need be. Would recommend particularly at the price.
This is very good malt. Have made a couple of batches with this malt and my conversion rates are in the low 70's. The flavor and color are wonderful. Will buy more soon.
The malt was a bit darker than expected (closer to 5L than 3L), I was also worried about diastatic power since I couldn't find good info online. Mash efficiency was good, but wort was a few degrees L darker due to the slightly darker malt.
Definitely maltier than standard American 2-row pale malts.
I bought this on sale for $25. I did research before purchasing because I hadn't heard of this company and learned it is a staple in Europe. It arrived quickly. It was fresh and smelled great. I haven't brewed with it yet but I'm looking forward to trying it.
Very rich and flavorful malt. Great price. No regrets.
Hit efficiency exactly as planned. Tasting a kernel side by side to briess brewers this malt is PACKED with flavor. Tastes really good. Definitely darker than briess, but still about 7 SRM in an IPA. Hoping the malt flavor is not overbearing in my recipe that I usually use brewers malt in. Either way, it will change the beer, but i have had trouble getting hops to stand out in a beer.
