This Scotch Ale recipe is a huge, malty beer with a deep rich copper color. Scotch Ales have a flavor a little reminiscent of single malt Scotch with smoky overtones and roasted flavors. With a 1.075 to 1.080 starting gravity and 24 IBU of bitterness, it is distinctly malty, but not cloying like some Scotch Ale recipes. Scotch Ale strains typically ferment well down to 60 degrees and leave behind very few esters or fruity flavors, emphasizing the malt.

Added oak cubes soaked in bourbon as well as vanilla beans after racking to secondary. Turned out quite tasty.

Great base beer
I pitched in some of the White Labs High Gravity Ale Yeast (WLP099) and this turned out great! The flavor/aroma turned out more similar to a Belgian quad than a Scotch ale. I've found this a great base beer for experimenting with. I'm ordering more now!

Not what I expected
I expected more of this recipe. Very standard Scottish ale, didn?t get the body and sweetness I like of Scottish ales.

Great beer
Turned out amazing and I will be buying this one again. Great to have on tap to balance out offerings of IPA or Pils.

just like kiltlifter
Yep I made this beer twice and dumped each batch. I thought I'd really screwed up the process, because to me it was terrible. Then I bought a Kiltlifter from Moyans brewery and It tasted very similar to what I had produced. So If that beer flavor is what you want then, this is the kit! I guess my palate just doesn't get the scottish yeast. I'll rate this product a 4 because it sure does taste like scottish beer, I just should have tried some before plunging in.
