Biere de Garde - All Grain Beer Kit (Advanced)

Please select from the following option(s) to see pricing and availability.

The "Original Gatoraid", Bière de Garde was said to give the French and Belgian farmer a much needed boost of energy during the day, due to the low alcohol and relatively high residual sugar content. Our version has a bit more malt than tradition dictates, but we think you will find this beer highly drinkable. The malt is the focus of this style of beer, with a slight toasty nose from the Munich. A yeasty character is not uncommon, and is achieved by an extended period of contact with the yeast bed – some commercial breweries go for up to six weeks! This should be fermented at 64°F.

I've has a hankering for Trois Monts for quite awhile, so I thought that I'd make it myself.

Low alcohol? I see about 18# of grain and est 8% abv. Is this "low" compared to wine or spirits?
Nathaniel Reynolds on Jun 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Nathaniel - This beer has a lower abv compared to wine or spirits, but is on the higher side compared to other beer styles.

Smooth finish, packs a punch
This was one of the first all-grain recipes I made on my new MoreBeer Tippy 15 gallon system. This is the highest O.G. recipe I have made to date - but based on the results, certainly not the last. I made a single 5 gallon batch due to the large grain bill. Check you mashtun volume and plan accordingly. 10 days in the primary, 3 months in secondary resting at 40 degrees. Kegged with forced carbonation (intentionally slightly under-carbonated for style).

I recently took a vacation to Belgium and this beer reminds me of several of the better Belgian dubbels I had, but with more kick.

This Belgian/Franco strong brown ale balances residual sweetness and maltiness with a lingering alcohol finish that evaporates smoothly off the back of your tongue. A real winner and crowd favorite while tailgating this past weekend. I had just enough left over to enjoy a few (too many) myself last night. Be careful, this is good stuff, but boy does it pack a punch.
